Do you play on PC or console? On the PC version of Mass Effect you can cheat and have a Kaidan romance.
Start a female Shepard and use the console command to enter 'setgender 0'. This will give you a male Shepard which the game thinks is a female. You get Mark Meers voice in cut scenes too.
A couple of issues I've found though is that it only works if you use the default looks, when I changed a custom femshep it gave me a male body but kept my female head (quite odd to see a huge body with a female head talking in Mark Meer's voice.
Also character's will still say she and ma'am when referring to you. Also the female Shepard will still be used in cut-scenes.
I've not tried to import the save where I romanced Kaidan, so I can't say what the results would be.
Not an ideal solution I admit but it is nice to be able to romance Kaidan in the first game, you just need to close your eyes on occasion ![]()

ME1: No one. Waited for m/m.
ME2: No one. Waited for m/m.
ME3: (Cortez by mistake lol then reloaded and) Kaidan.
Cortez was honestly a hilarious mistake. We're just dancing bro... y u gotta rub up on me?
Kaidan isn't the best but he's good enough. I only wish I had more to go on in ME1-ME2.

There is also a way to do that with custom faces. I tried it once with FemShep and she had the option to romance Ashley.
It requires a bit of save editing via an HEX editor, but it's a far superior method. It doesn't cause much trouble in ME3 except for a few missing dialogues, and also works on Xbox360.

I prefer not tampering with the story as Bioware released it.
I don't *entirely* mind the 'slow burn' either. Establishing Kaidan and Shepard as friends in ME1, through him often being in squad and positive comments tossed his way, and taking the relatively friendly route in the Horizon conversation, it works OKAYish. It gives a history before there being any sort of fling.
Sometimes TBH even IRL that's pretty hawt IMO. ![]()

I almost never romance anyone in ME1. For one thing you're technically still honest-to-God Alliance military, and two out of the three possible love interests are your direct subordinates. Fraternizing with either Kaiden or Ashley isn't for the good of the galaxy, it's for your own amusement which goes against the spirit of your Spectre status, and even then it really could be a huge distraction in a fight or crucial moment of decision-making. *cough*Virmire*cough
That, and neither of them are really all that interesting. And I don't like Ashley's characterization in 3. I haven't even considered choosing her over Kaiden on Virmire once since ME3 came out, regardless of Shepard's gender. Mostly because protecting the nuke until takeoff should take priority over rescuing Ashley by mission parameters, but also because I absolutely dread having to look at her for any length of time come 3.
I've found that Mass Effect 2 gives us much better circumstances for Shepard to get into a plausible romance. S/he literally died once at the beginning of the game, so a strong impulse to look for comfort and live a little that wasn't there before would make perfect sense. S/he's also isolated and technically out of the military, and the new romance options are just so much more colorful. Miranda works much better as a foil to Shepard's morality, motivation and general situation than Ashley does, Garrus has more backbone, is way more reliable and has more in common with Shepard than Kaiden does, and both are just more emotionally independent and have more initiative of their own than the LIs from 1. And Tali is just plain adorable and admirable despite being a little young. Never tried romancing Thane or Jack, although Thane's conversations did touch me in my female playthrough.

The flirting I grant you, but the sex scene is when the Normandy was friggin 'stolen' and the crew is on a mission that it is very likely to die from.. so I'll grant them that allowance to get their groove on.
I watch the footage and while the game is dated now (IMO) and the dialogue has its cheese... its kinda weighty. These are people that don't really HAVE to head into what they're heading into. They are being carried primarily by Shepard and Shepard is being carried primarily not by an Alliance mission, but HIS mission he just pushes on for. Its stuff like ME1's romance scenes that sneaks up on me that before Shepard is anything.. he's just Shepard, the guy who fights the Reapers. Period. Some emotional relief before heading into the fray is something I easily forgive, in all the games.
But yeah it feels the most optional in ME1. Its in ME2 that Bioware seems to have clued in that people REALLY get their jollies from romances and ME3 that they try to add a little (LITTLE) depth to them. I predict MEA will go even further, akin to DAI, where romance is allowed some room to breathe and develop in more varied ways throughout the game and even its main plot elements. ME1 is a fling compared to ME3, and that makes sense.

ME1 - Pining for Kaidan as a male Shep
ME2 - Being heartbroken because Kaidan ditched me like that
ME3 - finally my Shep can work on picking up the pieces of his shattered heart.
I wish there was more Kaidan in ME2.

Oooh, but that was the most interesting playthrough so far for me, my FemShep who didn't want to get involved with anybody, fell for Kaidan, saved him because of feelings, and broke up with him in ME3 to avoid situations like these, but in the end had her fair share of distractions, heh. I enjoyed that a lot ![]()

No one until ME2. Kaiden is alright for many girls but not for me, though I prefer his friendship in ME3, same with Liara. I found them more bonded as friends than lovers.

Except for the one run that I modded the game to romance Kaidan as male too, but I dislike that I can't do that with a custom shepard, so no deal, enjoy your hand Shepard ![]()

Liara for ME1 with a Female Shepard, none for a Male Shepard because I've got my eye on two people from ME2 and one or two others from ME3...
Sorry, Ashley. Atleast you're a Spectre AND hittin' it on with Vega in the male playthrough....

I just got ninja-manced by Liara.
Was planning to do a run with Kaidan as my female Shepard's love interest, so I made all the right moves with him. I turned Liara down when she mentioned she was interested and comforted her after her mother was killed. Also made sure to say to kaidan that it was him I was interested in.
Yet come the scene where Shepard is sitting by the lockers, it is Liara that comes and tries to get Shepard back into action.
Seems that the game heavily favours Liara.

FShep I paired with Kaidan and MShep I paired with Liara. It's funny, when I created the Shepard that I wanted to romance Garrus with in ME2 I accidentally romanced Kaidan. So from now on when I romance Garrus I leave Kaidan behind on Virmire.

What seriously? What options did you pick wen she asked you about your intentions? I first say that Kaidan is special for me. But then, she still don't get the picture and asks If I feel that way about her too. So say no HERE!

I told her I wasn't interested but wasn't nasty in the other conversations. I told Kaidan I was absolutely interested but did pick some renegade options when he was talking about his past.

That will do it - does the same thing with Ash and Liara. It can lead to a scene in the comm room that really makes it seem like Shep is a dog. I hate that because he's not - and never has been. Each of my Sheps is unique, but none of them have been cheaters.
Talking to ME2 squadmates after Loyalty Missions became a spot that I learned the hard way to make a game save. Just in case.

Playing as broShep, I planned to romance Ashley but then Liara just threw herself at me and I thought why not so I went with her. Anyway, Liara is my canon LI not just in ME1 but in the whole trilogy, if I plan to romance someone else (like Garrus, Tali, Jack etc) for the run I don't romance anyone in ME1.

That's the weird thing though, I never got the confrontation scene. Somehow I had locked in Liara before that point when I was aiming squarely for Kaidan.
What's annoying is that in the past when going for Liara I've always gotten the confrontation.
I must have done something very wrong to mess up like this.
