That's the weird thing though, I never got the confrontation scene. Somehow I had locked in Liara before that point when I was aiming squarely for Kaidan.
What's annoying is that in the past when going for Liara I've always gotten the confrontation.
I must have done something very wrong to mess up like this.
Who's your romance partner for Mass Effect One?

My femshep has always romanced Kaiden since the first game. I like the dynamic between them and I like how Kaiden is interested in her, but he has a pretty reserved and laid back way of approaching the situation. He's also a bit shy and doesn't express his emotions all that quickly either. And the relationship grows nicely in ME3. And while Garrus and Thane have excellent romances, I just don't see them as one. They are combat buddies to me.
For my broshep, nobody in ME1. I simply do not like Liara and I choose Kaiden on Virmire almost always regardless of male or female Shepard. I find it hard to not choose Kaiden. He's your official crew member who's been there since the start and he feels like a good friend to my broshep. Plus, broshep's ME2 romances are far better and more natural (like Jack, Tali, and Miranda).

But that wasn't possible, so I chose Liara. I liked Liara a great deal in ME1 due to her being nerdy and awkward, and her voice acting was a lot better than it became in ME2.

Well this all depends on which Shep I'm playing:
Rhianna- Kaidan (through all three games)
Sara- No one (romances Garrus in ME2-3)
Nadia- No one (romances Thane in ME2-3)
Lilith- Kaidan (although she romances Garrus in ME2-3)
Silvia- Liara (through all three games)

Kaidan for Femshep, Hand for maleshep lol
Except for the one run that I modded the game to romance Kaidan as male too, but I dislike that I can't do that with a custom shepard, so no deal, enjoy your hand Shepard
Shepard on Omega for the first time
Moklan: Go to Afterlife and see Aria
Shepard: Whatever, where can I get a recent issue of Fornax?
Seriously though, while I have tried just about all of the romance options over the course of many characters my canon Male Shepard chose Liara.
I find it unlikely that Shepard would jeopardize morale and unit cohesion by fraternizing with a junior officer under his command.
While Liara might seem young and naive at first Shep is kind of flattered by her little crush on him. Her innocence and awkwardness disarms him and he starts to open himself up to the idea and see where it goes. That's how I rationalize it anyway.

I romanced Ashley on my 1st play through and then I romanced Liara once with a FemShep on my 6th or so playthrough while getting the last of those companion achievements.

I had my heart on Kaidan since the first one,and waited for him the whole 3 games...but in the end of ME3,I have no choice but to lose him again.
But since it's for the sake of the galaxy, definitely no regrets! It's been a helluva ride!

Usually I romance Liara. But recently, and for my canon playthrough, I romanced no one. I did begin a relationship with Ashley, only to leave her to die on Virmire. Then in ME2 and ME3 I romance Jack.

Did Bioware hit on this wonderful thing by accident, or did they intend for it to be so good? If so, why didn't they continue with it? Did it lean towards too many diverging paths in ME2?
You can blame that idiot reporter from Fox News for how badly romances turned in Mass Effect 2. Even when she was *shown* the scenes in questions by Bioware staff, she never turned around and publicly announced that she made a mistake, nor did she do a story about how mistaken she was. As a result, the conservative media outrage continued and Bioware ended up wrecking romances in ME 2.
Bioware made the deliberate decision to include romance in their games a long time ago, when they put them into Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II, though, and they were popular. Partly due to how *different* the idea was at the time, as very few mass-market games ever even touched on the possibility with the main character.

I just went and watched that Fox News report you were talking about. I can't believe that these people think that they can have a debate when they haven't even played the damn game.

All my FemSheps romanced Liara (and stayed loyal to her throughout the series). I think she has the most complete romance arc and probably the best overall
This. OTP for me also.
As for my broshep, I only completed ME with him once and picked Ashley. Wasn't bad, still vastly prefer playing with femshep.

I like the way they referenced it in bring down the sky in the X57 Radio building.
'Project director wants to shut us down. Says our music is too "extreme", that we're inciting the younger workers to riot and sleep with aliens. I asked him if he'd listened to us. He said he talked to someone who heard about what we play.'

For ME1, it's always the same for me.
Male Shepard gets Ashley and Female Shepard gets Kaidan. Just straight up normal relations.

FemShep 1 was not supposed to romance anyone. If it wasn't a certain Turian, no one would do. But I talked too much with Kaidan and I was friendly. I was mentally not invested in Kaidan and should've rebuffed him at some point. It made for an awkward scene when he came to visit FemShep. I was not prepared for a game where short dialogue options could completely change individual relationships x)
And while Garrus and Thane have excellent romances, I just don't see them as one. They are combat buddies to me.
I kind of get the combat buddies thing. Garrus spend most of his time ignoring my FemShep (which is a feat of itself, when she was running around in garish "golden" armor), despite my frequent attempts of conversation. It felt like he was not meant to be more. At some point Thane locked onto FemShep, but nothing came of it because I was nearing the end of the game and I finally pressured Garrus into paying attention to me.

You can only pursue a romance if you complete their loyalty mission after Horizon, and Garrus' LM comes a bit later than the other ones. Around the same time you recruit Thane and Samara.

I thought Liara was bad for Ninja-mancing but I'm nearing the end of a Dragon Age: Origins run and have to turn down Alistair and Leliana, I've said nothing anywhere near romantic to them, instead focusing solely on Zevran.

The part where you have to pressure Garrus to feel something for you is a turn off for me. I flirt with him and turn him down next because "we're friends, let's not mess it up" and he was relieved, I felt sorry for him actually.

We all romance who we want though. Most women love Kaiden, but I can't stand him as a romance (and let's face it, FemShep in ME2 was waaay too ready to jump any male's body. Ugh...)

I keep turning Kaidan down while pining for Garrus.
All it took was for me to die and get put back together to get the balls to tell him that he's sexy.
