Play a female Shepard, romance Garrus, and have fun with Mordin's explanations and Joker's porn videos ~
Oh and please, next time don't forget to ask the same question to the "oh right fanboys........." who romanced Tali.

My main Shepard doesn't romance anyone in Mass Effect 1.

Liara.
My main Shep's heart beats bright Asari blue.
For other Shepards, I might have a fling in ME2 with Jack or Miranda. High intensity situations have strange effects on people. Find comfort in the arm that will hold ya.

No one. Renegade femshep is too busy killing all the things to give a **** about that.

Yep, according to Mordin, it's "possible" but there are a few health risks involved. Same with Tali (though the risk is significantly greater for Tali- Shepard's essentially risking her life).
To answer the OP, I usually go for Kaidan and then decide whether to stay loyal or not in ME2. I'm pretty bad at avoiding romance in ME1 >.>

It's usually either Kaidan or Liara. Liara since--as aforementioned--her romance is the most complete. It could also be because of the amount of content with her down the line in comparison to other ME1 romances. Been leaning towards Kaidan recently though. He's pretty attractive to me in ME1, but after that he starts coming out with BS I just can't quite be bothered with.

Ashley was the first one. The relationship didn't really last. I think they both gradually drifted away from each other. I think the separation after his "death"-and the conflict regarding his Cerberus "career" took its toll on the relationship. They never really got back together when they reunited in ME3.

I think I will try romance Liara. I like Kaiden, and hope I don't miss much of his story by picking Liara. I don't like romancing humans in the video games, too plain vanilla. Garrus would have been a nice option.

Hmm... I notice a pattern here.
Liara doesn't really work for me, even though I like her characterization in ME1 better than the other two games.

I don't even know if it's possible, but I'm trying to romance Tali this time.
