Read that again. The recoil is equal to the impact energy. Nothing to do with the mass of the projectile. The paint chip would cause the same recoil as the slug. That's the basis of the mass effect.
Well, that's another example of the Codex failing at physics: in Real Life , it's the momentum of projectile and shooter that must be equal. But aside showcasing the Codex writer's incompetence, my main point was that the Codex doesn't states directly that Mass Effect firearms has muzzle energies comparable to atom bombs. (Dreadnought main guns probably do, but they are not firearms.) The depiction of their effects in the games and calculations from real life and in-game data puts their muzzle energies equal to or somewhat higher (but not 10 magnitudes higher) than modern-day firearms.
