Except no sword could cut a meter-long gash in the armor in Mass Effect. It would require a lightsaber.

While the corpses being slashed open was not modeled for practical reasons, swords being able to massively damage armored targets is consistently demonstrated in Mass Effect. All these walls of text about the physical impossibility of it only prove that they SHOULDN'T be able to, IF the series would be concerned with realism. Which it evidently isn't.

That toxin takes days to kills. The Phantoms instantly kill with their sync animations.

Dose makes the poison. Being penetrated by the entire length of the blade could input enough poison to kill in seconds, while the poison from the surface cuts could take days.

Bayonet actually makes more sense than a katana.

It's a short backup option that does not get in the way, and is used only in a very particular set of circumstences and only if the other, better options, failed.

The katana is a better melee weapon that the bayonet. What stops you from choosing a backup weapon that is also good? (Especially since as an N7 operative, you have training in both of them.)

It struck me that despite writing a dozen posts in this topic, I never addressed its original theme. Allow me to rectify that.

The Destroyer and the Slayer could serve as single player classes in their current form; their powers are improved versions of the vanilla human's powers anyway. Just add some ammo powers and they are good to go. The Fury and the Paladin are too specialized for that, but mashing them together with their vanilla counterpart would round them out nicely. The Demolisher and the Shadow... well, as the single representative of their classes, they wouldn't do. They are great niche kits, but they mostly avoid the main themes of their classes (pet control plus elemental rock-paper-scissors and sniping, respectively), and trying to fix that would compromise their theme, resulting in a Frankeinstein monster of a class.

Really, I must have played anothers series of games named 'Mass Effect' because that never happened in the games I played.

A katana is too long, gets in the way, sticks out of the profile, etc.

(as a soldier you don't carry things because they look cool, what you carry is what you absolutely need, and it needs to be secured to your body so it

wouldn't make too much noise or get in the way if you need to crawl or go through a narrow space.)

A Katana's range is also rather limited. To effectivelly use one you need the space to swing and cut, and in this situation a shotgun is better.

In narrow spaces and in close hand-to-hand, a combat knife / pistol is better.

P.S. SpecOps soldiers today do not usually receive training in the use of a katana, I don't see why N7 will be different.

P.P.S. I can see a Katana being used by someone, sure, but it is simply seems a whimsical, sub-optimal choice,

not something a proffesional soldier would do. Maybe I'm wrong.

A bayonet is not a shotgun, pistol or knife, about which my response was. However, you have a point in that melee weapons fill a very narrow niche. Someone like, say, a quarian engineer would find very little use of them. That's why it's only used by characters whose other abilities synergize with it very well.

Yes

I'd like to see a Vanguard based on the Slayer

Phase disruptor isn't op at all and wouldn't break the sp campaign

Who says we're playing a soldier (even though it's unfortunately very likely again. Boooooring)?

I think the sword would be best with a biotic style class (make the most sense "lore wise" and blah blah blah) and is what I'd use it for. A powerless vanilla human....maybe not so much (maybe an infiltratior though).

I honestly cannot decide whether you are sarcastic or not.

Still, I must point out that MEA being a new game, every returning power is going to be rebalanced.

No, I'm serious.

The Slayer was my favorite of the N7 MP guys.

Omni swords would have been more kickass and more immersive. I Don't get why the swords have to be katanas, they could have been easily implemented, and omni katanas could have been a option too! Come on bioware take notes!  :(

Out of the N7 classes I'd probably say that while I had fun with the Shadow, Paladin was my favorite.

Bioware creates an omni shield but not an omni sword...why?

I doubt that was the case, even if it was, it would have been silly. Artix entertainment wins lawsuit against Bioware!

The last two games are Mass Effect 2 and 3. These are the two games that have swords. (There are a few decorative ones in the Kasumi DLC, if I recall correctly.) So this is just flat out not true.

No swords ever used in battle in previous games, decorative yes, used in battle? no.

I don't remember where this is, considering the child in this video won't explain anything but yell and his tv is very low...um...quality, I'm guessing this what you were referring to: https://youtu.be/g08v9OV4Ums

i've played shadow, infact! she's my most played character NYEHAHAHA!, so please don't show me a gold solo of a default colored shadow *shivers* Atleast put some color other than red! I find this insulting that you assume that i don't play the mp :/
