As long as you're a team player (help with the objectives, use consumables when necessary etc) most people won't mind your skill level or the kits you are using.
So I wouldn't worry about it too much, OP.

If Silver is starting to get boring.....then it's time to move up.
How I transitioned to Gold was based on my comfort level.....Once I figured out how to constantly top-score & I figured out how to use characters to their max potential...then I decided it was time
My advice is to ALWAYS help on the objectives NO MATTER WHAT...those are the money waves and that's what you are there for......
If you find yourself dying too often..stick closer to your team...
Consumables are a common courtesy..I suggest you ALWAYS equip even level 1 stuff...To me, not equipping any kind of consumable is disrespectful to the team.
also, make sure you have your medi-gel / ops packs / rockets / thermal clips purchased before entering a match.
You're only allowed to play Gold on a level 1 NovaGuard with common weapons, no mods, and no gear.
But f'seriously, I don't think there's really a "good" or "right" time to jump up a difficulty level. The best thing to do is, once you're comfortable with silver, just pick the weapon(s) and/or kit you're the most comfortable with (not necessarily the one that you score the most points with - yes, it should be one you're getting above average scores with, but longevity is just as, if not more, important) and set the match finder to Gold. And take consumables, otherwise whoever you end up with will possibly reach through the screen and make a lunge at you.
Real players don't talk about gold - they play it and squeeze it hard with both hands.

Thanks for the great responses. What I have started doing is breaking in kits and trying new builds on Silver before stepping up to Gold. I can make mistakes on Silver without ending up on the deck.
I always use consumables and try to use up all my missiles instead of all my medigel. Oh, and Rio is the worst map by far. Even when I try to stay the heck out of the box of shame, I still get drawn in there and flanked. Wave 10 Devices there means guaranteed wipe as far as I can tell.
Besides 1 or 2 very bad locations, devices are actually pretty good on Rio, because the map is so big that you can attract enemies in one side and then sprint to the other side to disable the device before they reach you again. Escort or objects recoveries can however be pretty terrible on this map.
Disregard this silliness, OP- the whole point of consumables is to use them. May as well do it.
Because the game is so well balanced? Nice try.

Your advice is for a newish player to not use their consumables... because game balance? ![]()
Definitely not while driving.

This is a good strategy. Once you get the hang of them on Silver, Gold becomes much smoother.

And here I thought that was advice for BSNers.... whatever, I'm drunk.

The OP is concerned about moving up to Gold (hence the thread topic), so not exactly a seasoned vet
Sounds like a David Diablo Alt!As I've mentioned, I regularly play and extract on Gold but nearly always finish last and often have to be revived. Yet I like to think I assist the team.
I don't know what your manifest is like, but the problem might be you are in games with players who have high level weapons and better suited characters for Gold.
Some characters just don't deal enough damage, so other characters will tend to deal damage at a faster rate. The guns make a difference too. A Turian Soldier using a Vindicator will have a much tougher time topping the boards compared to a Geth Soldier using a Geth Shotgun.
QFE isn't the strongest character; it's very far from my top picks to go into a gold match.
If you are on that fine line between gold and silver then certain classes make all the difference in the world as far as feeling and being useful. Many classes are terrific once you get your feet wet or if you have decent team mates but tough otherwise. If I was to pick one class that should make you useful, viable and a less threat to be on your face it would be the huntress.

Once you're a BSNer, you're too OP for Silver.
^ What is N7 level and why should I be paying attention to it?

I guess you haven't discovered the glory of the Claymore / QFE combo. ![]()
The only time I believe it is not advisable to play Gold is when you're just starting out. Like your N7 level is two digits..........Even if you've played before and are ranked with the aformentioned two digit N7 rank, work your way back.
I agree with the idea that new players need to learn, but I've started enough alts to know when I'm ready for Gold. And I'm nothing special btw, but I know what I'm doing. My general approach is to solo 5 Bronze games, followed by 3 Silver, and then see how long it takes me to mess up in a Gold solo. Answer: Usually not long. I know you can get the Lone Wolf banner in 5 games, but I can't, and would be more than happy to do it in 10. I've yet to succeed, although I once ran out of time on the last wave 10 enemy target on my second Gold solo, and had to buy a new controller and make a charitable donation to compensate for the flurry of expletives. In my defence the controller was well past its best anyway, and had contributed to my failure because I couldn't run.
At that stage I often just go pugging on Gold, as my character will easily be up to level 17 or 18. I've been kicked a few times, but that only annoys me if the ones doing the kicking don't have consumables equipped and I do - as I will, because I'll have bought a load of Recruit Packs and not used any of their contents while soloing. Level 1 is better than nothing, and the only thing that would stop me playing Gold would be a total and complete lack of armour piercing, as I remember the embarrassment of not being able to deal with Guardians while three others were in Spectator Mode. Playing with only two d-pad items is also great training for learning not to rage-gel. In theory, at least ![]()
If I happen to have a bad run, or feel like I'm not contributing, I won't really be enjoying myself and I'll switch down to Silver and level up some other characters. And I think that's the most important thing - if you're having fun, the chances are you're playing at the appropriate difficulty level.

Some pugs that seem me play today might say I'm not ready for Gold... Wrong. I'm am ready.
