Update: Mostly I've been playing Kroldier (melee focus with maxed Carnage and Crusader) or Valkyrie (no Warp build using either claymoar or Graal). It's been fun but I'm still scoring low. The QFE works better when I don't feel like having to get in the enemies' faces to do damage.
When is it really OK to play Gold?

My advice is that you are ready when you are comfortable playing Silver and consistently feel that you make a contribution in those games. Be prepared though that it's a big difference between Gold and Silver, equipping consumables when you move up is highly recommended.
I still remember how excitening it was to move up to Gold, back then it felt really intense and fast paced, my first Gold game was with the AA packing the mighty Eagle I, those were the days
