A couple of reasons -
-- Because it litters my hard drive - and load menu - with files I did not ask for, do not want, and in fact specified not to have.

Err... litters it with one file,if we're talking about the ME implementation. PC, anyway; I have no idea what consoles do.

Edit: I mean, one file per Shepard.

-- Because devs tend to take it as an open invitation to push players through sequences instead of allowing them to proceed at the pace they would choose for themselves. ME3 has some VERY LONG sequences where the player is not allowed to save. I don't think I've ever played a game that was harder on my PS3 - because I frequently had to turn it off in the middle of some damned sequence that didn't allow me to save at all.

Want to revisit a specific dialogue, interrupt, etc? Tough. You can either shut it down (which is hard on PS3s) and reload OR continue until you get to a place that allows you to exit. Then you'll have to sit through 20-30 minutes worth of content leading up to it - again - because you weren't allowed to save anywhere in-between.

I'm not sure you're getting the causality right. Without autosaves, what makes you think Bio would be any less restrictive with the manual saves than they are with the autosaves? This seems like a roundabout way to get at the issue of restricted manual saves.

An intelligent, insightful and completely affordable suggestion to improve the game?

I like your idea but auto saving before conversations and cutscenes would introduce another issue - having to go through them all over again if you subsequently die.

The Krogan Battlemaster scene after you rescue Liara in ME1 is a great example. If you die in the fight then you have to go back through the whole elevator ride and conversation with the Krogan again.

Maybe it's a case of picking the lesser of two evils. Or maybe there's a happy middle ground somewhere.

Then they really need to ramp up the paraphrasing so I have a much clearer idea of what my character is about to say.

I think this is a better solution to the problem.

I agree with the sentiment in the title, and would like to see maybe 3 possible autosaves in a queue to choose from.

Skyrim keeps the three latest auto-saves. I see no reason Bioware could not do the same.

Just have two autosaves -- one before the convo, one after. Plenty of games do this.

The Witcher 3 had 3 auto-saves IIRC, which was great.

That said, I usually abuse my quicksave button anyway, before conversations and such, so It's usually not a problem for me.

I think the causality was the fact that they made very high piles of scripted events and shut down player agency during those lengthy sequences. All in the name of pacing, I would presume.

The result is that Bioware maintained complete control over where the player could enter / exit content. The consumer could take the content only in entire chapters; you could not set the book aside and then pick it up again on the same page. You could not re-read a page or a paragraph without re-reading the entire chapter.

If one of your favorite parts of the game is in the middle of a chapter, you're not going to be able to experience it again without experiencing a lot of other content you might not want to sit through. Whether autosave creates a save there isn't relevant - autosaves aren't permanent, and are written over or deleted.

Of course, autosave not only had the privilege of saving in a lot more places - a privilege denied the player - but also insisted on doing so, with no regard for the user's settings.

I don't like or want autosave. I want my setting options to be respected. I want to manage my own save files, and the agency to choose when to move on.

I think that could cause problems for people who have to reload a save missing out on stuff because they think they'd already talked to them.

Personally, I just quicksave before each convo. But I have that option, I play on PC. I expect MEA to be PC/PS4/Xbone so I would expect the hardware to handle regular saving manually while in hubs.

I will never complete XCOM on Ironman/Classic difficulty again ... did it once and it was like stressful man

I've not even attempted Impossible difficulty.

I just recently played XCOM, and I've never been so happy with a game.  It was like Final Fantasy Tactics: XFiles Hardcore Edition.  I started it on Ironman/Classic and kept trying until I eventually made it all the way through.  I need to try it with Ironman/Impossible some time soon, once I finish my latest ME playthough...

On topic, this suggestion seems reasonable.  Ideally, they would probably do both and just keep the last 3 autosaves so you get a bit more control over how far back you go when you backtrack.
