Understanding the different types of damage....

I have built up a large collection of crystals for Shale and gauntlet's for my mages.  One thing I've never been clear about is who or what is most impacted by the different types of "elemental force"?  For example, if you take on a group of Darkspawn, what hurts them the most?  Fire?  Cold?  Electricity?  Nature or Spirit damage?  What should you use against a dragon?  Against a group of hostile humans?  Spiders and other beasties?

With Shale, I tend to default to her fire crystals.  I initially reasoned that fire is bad for all enemies.  As you up the difficulty of the game (I'm currently on hard after having finished previous playthroughs at normal), I assume being more precise in your choice of elements is more important.

For my mages, I tend to make them specialists.  Morrigan, since she started off with some cold power, is my ice queen -- kind of appropriate I thought -- and I gave her the cold power gauntlets.  For Wynne, I built up power over fire to give her more offensive punch and gave her fire gauntlets.  Given that I have mage gauntlets for all elements now, I could switch them out if I knew when it would make a difference with which enemy.

Sorry for what has to sound like a newb question.  This game is very much "learn as you play" and even after you become a veteran, you still find that you missed key points here and there.

The Wikia can be very helpful. Check this out for resistances: http://dragonage.wik...ances_(Origins)

Thanks.  I wish there was a chart that laid what kind of enemy is vulnerable to what.  I imagine some are most vulnerable to heat while others to cold, to nature damage, etc.

There isn't a chart, but from what I've seen....  there are several opponents that are resistant to nature magic (all versions of dead/skeletons and golems), a few (in the Fade)  that are resistant to fire, but almost everything outside the mage's tower is vulnerable to fire.  If you take Shale into the Mage's Tower, I would probably go for Arcane/Spirit damage, but for everywhere else, I would probably use fire.

If you have space to carry all of Shale's crystals around, you can always experiment.

That works. I'd just add that Shale's Spirit Armor is good for the archdemon, if you take her (and nature for her damage).

But you lose the itemset bonus (if I recall correctly there is one).   I would use fire crystals and use the potion/balm for spirit damage resistance.  I think those items work for Shale.

Yes, lugging around all Shale's crystals takes up a lot inventory space!  Not good, especially since I don't keep her continuously in my party.  A little annoying having to go to Soldier's Peak to stow them.  Defaulting to fire is what I usually end up doing.
