So, at the risk of stirring old wounds, I'd like to ask if party banter is working properly for anyone/everyone yet? After 12 patches, I hoped they sorted it out, but nope, my second playthrough (now somewhat near the end and clocking in at 120 hours) is just as banter-devoid as the first one. Not only that, but just as in my first playthrough, the only region where party banter seems to be working properly are The Hissing Wastes, where I now get regular banter every 5-10 minutes of gameplay.
For example, I had literally NO party banter throughout the entire Exalted Plains, and had only TWO instances of it in both the Emerald Glades and Emprise Du Lion. I don't quite remember about the other regions (since I wasn't taking notes yet), but nowhere was the banter anything like what I'm getting now in the Hissing Wastes.
And yes, I was trying to switch the characters out for quite some time, but then I paid a visit to the DA Wikia, and found out that I hadn't heard even a third of the recorded party banter for the party members that I had with me most often (Cassandra/Varric/Solas/Dorian). That's at least fifty hours of gameplay per each of those party members, and a lot more in the case of Cassandra. To say nothing of the rest of the squad that I don't take out as often.
So, yeah, has that issue been solved, or has everyone just grown complacent and/or made their peace with this? I don't see any talk of it on the forums now, though I haven't been on them in quite a while.
Party banter?

Hmm, what does that mean exactly? How frequently do you have party banter? Maybe I'm overreacting on the issue, but I don't think so. I don't think it's normal to have 0-2 instances of party banter in the majority of regions (or, again, at least in the three i mentioned), and to not hear at least 60% of available dialogue by the time you reach the very last stretch of the game. Is that just the way it was meant to be?
Also, I somehow remember these forums were all abuzz about the lack and/or infrequency of party banter just as the game launched, but am I misremembering? If I was just projecting my own problems, then parts of my post my sound strange, so I apologize for that.
Also, should I take this to the technical support subforums? I took it here because I'm not sure anymore if it's a bug or a "feature", to use a worn out phrase.

Still way too sparse, I average 3-4 banters per region, none in Western Approach. Maybe six in the Hinterlands. I'd rather hear repeats than this silence, banter every 2-4 minutes would be good.
Still a good game but, there still needs to be an option to turn frequent banter on.

It means that banter occurs at (what seems to me) natural pacing. Yes, they are more infrequent than in the previous games, but the areas are bigger. I would be more annoyed if I could exhaust all banter quickly (like you could in DAO).

I expected rarer banter as well, and would have nothing against it - it's a huge game. But to not hear at least half the banter from the people I take with me almost always by the time the game ends doesn't seem right to me. Why invest so much money and time in recording so much dialogue for the player to never hear.
On the example of Cassandra and Solas, the two characters I take with me by far the most often, and judging from what I see at the Dragon Age wikia, I haven't heard even half their possible banter. In over 120 hours of gameplay. That doesn't seem right.

Banter seems to trigger fairly "normally" for me across all regions but the Western Approach, where it *is* much less frequent, but does still occur. I go for periods of 10-40 mins with none, but as noted above... these are LARGE regions. And I'm one of those who finds looped banter incredibly annoying.
It took me the longest time to realize that those annoying side convos between Mother Giselle and other NPCs were supposed to be clues to have my IQ interrupt. (Dorian's "... clucked at by a hen, evidently!" line was particularly grating.)

Keep in mind that whenever you see a loading screen ("traveling" screens don't count), the banter trigger countdown (set typically at about 10-15 minutes) resets. Also, environmental comments count as banter.

The banter timer is a random amount of time between 500 and 900 seconds, and is one of 3 timers ran by the same pointer (one is 10-100, the other is 100-300).
I have not had any issue with regular banter firing except in the Western Approach where I do hear it but not as often as everywhere else. What I have noticed though is if I am always running the same party members through the whole game, they will actually run out of things to say for the area I am in, and then eventually, globally.
Another thing I have found, If you are trying to play a game that was started before patch 6, timers tend to stay messed up in the save (yes, banter timer is recorded in the save files). If thats the case you might want to try a new game to see if banters fire more frequently.

Thanks to everyone for all the answers, especially these concerning the more technical details that I didn't know anything about. Now I have a clearer image of how the banter system works. And yes, I did start this playthrough right after patch 5 hit, so that might be part of the problem (though I'd like to know, if possible, what is the difference between pre-patch 6 banter and later banter?). Also, I saved and loaded quite a lot, since I played a big part of the game in small segments that were more easily managed time-wise. That frequent viewing of the loading screen might have had an adverse effect as well then.

Patch 6 is when they started changing the banter code to try and improve triggering, and made adjustments in every patch up to 9 (I think).
