And yet this still happens to non-modded games, or PS3 users that got screwed over big time with Skyrim where your save is destined to implode.

Does that still happen? I have a shrinkwrapped PS3 version of Skyrim.. hadn't gotten around to playing it.

I didn't say it wasn't happening to non modded games.

Plus, PS3 users got screwed because they had to use a PS3. The design of that console made it really annoying to code anything on it if you couldn't devote all your time into making it specifically for the PS3 =P

Bethesda might have fixed it after months and months and months of justified complaints, but I doubt it. This is the same company that had a dlc break another dlc (Pointlook out causes a very nasty bug in The Pitt if both are active)

Not sure about what kind of updates they did on the PS3 version but if you've got a half way decent PC and really want to try it, I'd say just pick it up in the next Steam sale for like $5.

Then you can make use of the abundance of mods, even if only the bug fixing ones.

Modded Bethesda games is the only way imo. Lord knows we'll need it for FO4.

I'm kind of surprised you even buy their games given that I don't think I've ever seen you say anything the slightest bit positive about Bethesda.

but yeah, mods are the way to go.

Fun theme park games, some very good quests and quest lines, Morrowind, Arena and Daggerfall where fantastic, SHivering Isles is in my top 10 expacs, enjoyed The Pitts writing and enjoyed Dawnguard.

I just get on their case because Oblivion, FO3 and Skyrim had alot of potential that was squandered with typical Bethesda crap that then produces stuff like shivering Isles which was amazing and plus it feels they rely to much on modders making their game match the potential said game has. If I didn't care I would not bother.

I would be more forgiving with the PS3 version of Skyrim if it worked better then Fallout 3, but the opposite is true from my experience they went backwards in how well the games work on the PS3. I decided to do something useful of my copy and use it as a coaster.

As far as save game corruption with Bethesda with the Fallout 3 DLC they had to issue warnings with at least two of them because the act of installation of them could corrupt saves. The issue with the save bloat is all the random stuff you encounter in the game for it records the locations of everything you touch or move so eventually the save has too much useless information to store.  At least that is what I gathered from an interview from one of the developers from New Vegas.

Mods are needed just to reduce the crazy amount of bugs Skyrimjob has, and even with those unofficial patches, it still has plenty.

Considering 90% of the side quest in Skyrim are MMO quests with the Radiant system just being daily missions with a different name, not as strange as you think.

There's more to TES than a theme park, imo. That's more of an MMO thing to me. And DAI is almost like that, but not entirely.

Radiant quests aside, their environments and the amount of randomness/emergence gives it a lot of personality and unpredictability.

Not really no.

If I have to hear one my "We've crafted a beautiful world" from Howard or a "Explore a beautifully crafted world" from Bethesda marketing...

Also, we're all off topic! I'm reporting everyone for breaking the rules of this forum!!!!

When I think of a theme park, I just think of getting on rides and mostly seeing something as intended.. it's on rails.

TES allows me to screw it up more.. or for something to come on screen or become an obstacle and just rearrange the entire pacing of the story. It's usually not the quests themselves that are fun.

I don't thing people in here really have much of a clue what a 'new engine' means.

It's not a car. You don't take out the old, worse parts and replace them with new, better parts.

My neighbor did replace the engine in his car. It has a lot more hp. Sounds great. So for him it was a matter of taking out the old and replacing it with a new, better engine. hahaha

It's more of the illusion of being able to screw it up more.

I think this in particular is great, though. Even if it's not the tightest experience at release, a new main entry Bethesda game is like a damn canvas, and if the community is up to it, the results are invariably going to be fantastic.

Until we have to pay for mods and greed complicates the process.

I do. This spring's events were certainly disheartening, but I'm hopeful that the blowback from that will have an effect on the whole situation. Even so, I think most mod creators realize that you get back what you put in and then some. There will always be free modding communities online.

In retrospect, my biggest takeaway from that whole thing is that we need someone to take a chunk of Steam's business away, like, yesterday.

And you can thank Todd Howard for that, he wrote the CS for Morrowind and has always been a strong proponent for modding.

Fallout 3 is better written than New Vegas and better written than Inquisition by a wide margin.

The writing in Skyrim is indeed complete garbage, however.

I disagree, New Vegas had the better writing. I will say that DAI is complete trash in writing as well.

I don't think it will have the effect that you're looking for. Apparently what Valve learned from the whole thing was "We should have tried it with a new game, not one that's been out for years".

GOG would be a great competitor if they could get more of the major releases.

It's not like people aren't trying. Might have to wait for Steam to expend more goodwill first, though. Every couple of weeks here we get a "Steam good, Origin bad" thread, which never seems to have any rational basis.

Valve can do whatever they want with their own games, I guess. Whatever they do, I don't think it will eliminate the free modding communities online unless they conspire with one of the devs (say Bethesda) to close the system and make modding only accessible via their own platform. Which would be an indication that they weren't too interested in ever selling for PC again anyway. In any case, if that were to happen, it would likely bring the full force of gamer fury down on them. I'd like to see them weather that storm (and it would be nice to see that sort of thing turned towards a noble cause for once).

At less than 40, my Steam library isn't even that out of control. Buying more of my games on GOG would be a dream, though.

Steam's customer service has improved dramatically. Now when you request a refund, they spit on you before denying it.
