Fallout 4 will be grand. We all know this. Adding in all the first names could be a new bar set for RPGs. I mean, once you have something that is superior i.e. having the legendary and elusive first name in an RPG, one doesn't want to settle for a game without it.

I'm really hoping that the naming thing works well. If it does, that could really solve the problem of having surnames and titles be the extent of how any and all characters refer to your PC, even when close friends or lovers. In any case, I'm excited to finally get this game.

Doubt it. How often do characters say "Shepard" in the ME trilogy? Even if it was cut down to a fraction of that, you can't have every voice actor record the same line a thousand different times.

Speaking of which, who wants to take bets on how quickly the inevitable idiotic accusations of racism will arise when it turns out the bulk of the names recorded are "white" names?

Characters say Shepard quite a lot. Still, I'd like to think that maybe this would work. Perhaps it won't. If not then too bad, but I'm going to remain cautiously optimistic.

As for the second comment, who knows. If there's something with potential for people to get mad at, they probably will. Though the notion of "white" names is kind of funny. "Tyrone" is largely considered a "black" name, yet it originates from Northern Ireland. I don't suppose we'll be getting any of the stereotypical hood names though, like Laquisha or Darellion.

Considering that DAI had about 60,000, I feel that MEA will probably have the same amount as DAI. What I'm disappointed in is that Fallout 4 will probably have more dialogue than MEA meaning more narrative. I hope it isn't the case.

They recorded over 100 000 lines of dialogue for DA:I. Four voices for the PC just means less dialogue for everyone.

Bethesda says they put in the 1000 most common names for boys and the 1000 most common names for girls into Fallout 4.

Is that the claim, now? Last I heard it was just the 1000 most common names, total, and that included joke names people like to name their characters, like F*ckface.

Are they claiming two thousand, now?

Nope, they just said about a thousand of the most popular names. So probably 500 male and 500 female.

Good for Fallout 4. Personally I couldn't care less.

And if 50% of those 110,000 lines of dialogue are voiced by the same, monotone male voice and the other by the same, monotone female voice ala Skyrim then I'll take Bioware's diverse 60,000 lines over Bethesda's boring monotone 110,000 lines any time.

Cheap voice actors also makes this point:

No, but it does perhaps indicate dedication. Hopefully they wouldn't have spent that sort of money if they weren't confident in the writing.

irrelevant.

It has Courtenay Taylor at least... that alone makes me happy.

I don't know about the average NPCs though... I guess we'll see. I do know that Bethesda has tons of cash compared to Bioware though.

I'll be looking forward to reading a few reviews on FO4. Certainly won't be pre-ordering, but have it on my Steam wish list to keep an eye on it and see what's what.

If it gets good enough reviews might get it on a Steam christmas sale or something. Got some Steam credits after getting a refund on the train wreck that is Sword Coast Legends.

Of course the difference is that those lines are going to be divided up over several hundred characters you meet.    I highly doubt its going to feel 'narrative-driven'.   Looking forward to it though all the same.   Just as I am drawn to Bioware games when I want deep story and characters,  I generally go to Bethesda for game mechanics and world exploration.    They each have their strengths.

Except Bioware borrowed the worst part of Bethesda in DAI. Prisoner turned Savior.

That's their MO in TES at least. They tried something a little different in FO3. Maybe they'll try more in FO4.

Bethesda has a history of writing boring dialogue and characters. They've never done either of those things particularly well, so I'm not yet on the Fallout 4 hype train. 110,000 lines of dialogue will be a meaningless stat if those lines are Skyrim quality.

I don't know. M'aiq is always badass. And there was that twist when Ysolda turned out to be a drug dealer. :P

I just hope those 110,000 lines are more well written than fallout 3 was, that game was abysmal in that regard.

There are more then just the popular ones, they decided to have some that are just there for the "giggles", Polygon has one listed that makes me think they were reading the "mature" threads and I would post it here, but it would be blocked by the filters.

Ah, the hype train for Bethesda games...

Who wants to bet people won't be as upset at Bethesda the same way they would be upset at any other company?

I'll probably have fun with it regardless.

However it is Bethesda. When it comes to narrative, we should need to actually get our hands on the game before saying it's disappointing that it'll probably have more narrative than a BioWare game.

Cause half their lines have a habit of being pointless filler that gets repeated every 5 minutes.

I used to be a poster like you and then I took a ban to the knee...

Yeah, there is typically a reason why having voiced dialogue use a custom entered first name is so illusive in gaming.

I imagine it wont be quite as amazing as some of us are picturing it.

Of course not.

Yeah, it seems that Bethesda can get away with more things then any other developer.

For all the people who complain, they're dwarfed by the massive amounts of fans.

It's not Nintendo/Rockstar/or CoD, but it's up there.

Sadly, just means more repeating characters and the same VA talking to himself... That didn't change with Skyrim's 200 VA vs Oblivion's 17. Bethseda for action, Bioware for story. I also hope to work for Bio in the future too.

I just wonder why people are so willing to always look over the faults of the games, Fallout 3 had some of the worst bugs in a game that hurt my enjoyment of the game that if I buy Fallout 4 it won't be until all the patches and DLC are released because I don't want to have my save files corrupted again and lose 100's of hours of saves.

I don't remember the bugs, but I don't blame you if that's what happened. I've stayed pissed at games for the same reason. Took me a long time to play VtM: Bloodlines, for example... which turned out to be good, without the bugs.
