No thanks! The elves and Qunari in DA have been screwed up enough because their design team have no freaking clue what they should look like.  I'd rather the ME team create a new alien species than focus on redesigning the Asari.

I wouldn't mind a tweak. I really liked that design in the last image that the OP posted. Still Asari but with a little something else.

Someone's probably pointed this out, but the first 'alternative vision' of an Asari in the original post is actually a character from Metroid Prime 3...

No, as was said in game, most of the races (human, turian, salarian) all have this visual image of what the Asari look like and why they are appealing to such species, usually because of similar features shared between the aforementioned races and the Asari. To try and make them look MORE alien than has been established retroactively contradicts what came before.

Ah, yes. The Mary Sue species that every living being in the galaxy finds supur sexay and amazingly awesum!

Yawn.   The back of their heads look gross and their fronts are nothing to write home about. Especially generic asari with their plastic faces.

I wouldn't mind a redesign, but I don't really care about Asari much.

While most of the time I would agree with making aliens look more alien, and less human, the asari are a clear exception, because as others have pointed out, there's a reason they look so human-like, to human eyes. Each race sees them as resembling their own.

So to make the asari look less human would go against the lore, regarding the asari.

The Asari?

Drew Karpyshyn's own description from Revelations.... The Asari had an angelic, almost ethereal quality to her. Despite her blue complexion, her facial features were quite human, and she resembled a human female as did the rest of her species. The wavy semi-flexible cartilaginous crest atop of her head, and the skin folds on the back of her neck betrayed her alien origin.

I don't think they need to change.

They may be appealing to straight men, they must be changed!

I think one of the designers once said they were supposed to evoke a woman getting out of a pool, with her hair slicked back.

Yeah, basically Bo Derek-style, back in the day. She was a hottie.

You're thinking of a quote from The Art of the MEU book. Either Casey, Derek Watts (art director) or Chris Hepler (writer) said it. The exact caption is:

"To add a familiar element of science-fiction fantasy, we decided one of the main species in Mass Effect would be a race of beautiful, blue alien girls. An extensive exploration of the idea led to the asari appearing exotic and alien while still having some human qualities, which allowed them to be desirable as potential love interests. The original inspiration of the scalp tentacles was to evoke the image of a woman emerging from the water with her hair swept back.

Asari clothing was to be alluring and sexy but with a sense of class and style -- more of a Hollywood red-carpet feel than that of a stripper (except for the asari who were, in fact, strippers). Once we established the general look of the asari, we examined the fine details, like the scalp tentacles. "

Asari look exactly as we see them, which is they reason they can wear human (but not turian, salarian, quarian or krogan) armor and the reason they still look like blue humans in advertisements and vids, (which presumably don't release pheromones or have mind control abilities).

That "bachelor party" at Eternity was a deliberate and self conscious developer in joke about how every species in universe finding asari to be sexually attractive (even the essentially asexual salarians) makes no goddamn sense. People in this thread are taking it far too literally. There's nothing turian, salarian or krogan like about them, because as ME's answer to the green Orion girls they were deliberately and primarily designed to be attractive to human males.

It's also worth noting that hanar and elcor also hook up with them. I doubt they'd see anything looking like them.

That bachelor party is the ME equivalent of Sten trolling Morrigan in DA:O, isn't it?

I don't think there's any point redesigning them now, three games after their introduction. However, I'd like all asari to have the slightly scaled skin texture that Liara has in her romance scene. A few of them have it on their tentacle-things, but nowhere else. It just adds that extra alien aspect to them, instead of making them look like they have human skin. More unusual eyes (like Samara & Morinth) would also be good.

wha,... jellyfish with tentacles wouldn't like other people with tentacles? ... phesspaaa... and also Nyreen might have found Aria's head tentacles similar enough to male Turians head crest for all we know and dug it.

I'd also rather they just bring in a new alien and leave the ones we already know about alone.

Indeed, look at the Dragon Age 2 elves -.- or the re-design of Ashley in ME3 -.- (damned, barbie dolls aren't soldiers (at least not front line troops that get shot at and get dirty etc.)) - sufficient to say I am against any sort of race/character re-designs like that (there have been companies who have pulled something like that off, but they are far and in between and I generally wouldn't recommend trying it (one successful re-design was the Klingons in Star Trek, with those ridges from TNG onward!))

greetings LAX

That remodel of Ashley was the best thing they could've done to her, imo. It's not just unattractive women in the military you know. Plus...helmet.
