Because exploration in its self is a story. Traversing alien planets in different galaxy opens more story opportunities that the player can create for themselves than just go here and kill this. Inquisition did this perfectly as the area had a story of their own, you could tell just looking at them. Hopefully the main story takes a backseat.

Bioware please add more emphasis and exploring planets than adding side quest/filler just to pad out the game.

*sigh* Although I think this topic seems like trolling, I'm going to be serious here: They need more story in addition to the exploration stuff. Though I liked DA:I and the main quests, it could have done with more story-related main quests in the base game and a wider variety of side quests that were more fleshed-out/involved. I thought the DLC was pretty good overall and liked some of the things they did in Trespasser a lot, so really, they should be doing more of that (including more environmental puzzles, etc.).

EDIT: I like Skyrim and do like exploration a lot - but I want a world with story content equal to the amount of exploration that I can do.

Dear lord, no. Skyrim consists of running through caves and forests and dungeons and killing bandits and zombies and the quests consist of more running through caves and forests and dungeons and killing more bandits and zombies. The NPCs would barely make one Khalisah Bint Sinan al-Jilani if you put them all together. Games like Skyrim are fun for a while and the environments are beautiful, but it all gets old and boring rather fast unless you're interested in writing your story yourself. And that's not why I play BioWare games.

I respect your opinion, OP, and you're fully entitled to it. We all have different tastes after all and that's fine. However, I can't say this would be my cup of tea.

Why not just play skyrim? Bethesda do this much better than Bioware as DA:I showed.
Bioware need to stick to their strengths.

We are talking about a space opera here, not an open-world.

But you have reason on one point : I want to be so impressed by an alien landscape that I stay still, only to hear the sound, drop the controller and stay in front of my screen, admiring...

It happened to me in Skyrim when I get in the top of the mountain and see the map at my feet. Cut your breath...

Why do we love Mass Effect?

For the gunfight?

For the Multiplayer?

For the space fights?

No, we play it for the solo story and the massive replayability.

If you prefer the gunfight, play at Gear of Wars.

If you prefer the multiplayer, play any Callof.

If you prefer the space fight, play Elite.

But let us keep Mass Effect Story mode.

They aren't mutually exclusive. The Witcher 3 had an abundance of both, and both were of a very high quality as well. Bioware's problem is that they don't yet know how to mix the two, they've been telling the same story for 15+ years in games that basically play the exact same way. Now that they're (finally) branching out, there are going to be some teething issues.

BioWare's biggest strength has always been in their stories, characters and lore, though. And I dare say they know it very well. (David Gaider said himself that what he thought BW could do best were characters.) Shooting is nice but it wouldn't be a BioWare game if it didn't have something else going on. Multiplayer wasn't even part of BW games until recently. At least not in the traditional sense. In Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2, you could join or open a server to play the official campaign and other modules. It's not what the games became famous for, however. It's not what made BW famous. And I don't think I would be half as obsessed with BW games if they didn't put all that emphasis on world-building, story and characters, either. I have other games that serve well when I just want to spend my time shooting space zombies and the like. But I expect more from BioWare.

Moreover, games are an art form and it's up to their makers what they want to make them into. They can focus on different things. Games can consist of different things. Like making the stories good. Saying games aren't about stories is throwing all the games with great stories that we've already had out of the airlock. I think that BioWare offers something not every company does and that's exactly what makes their games unique, fresh and fun to play. Take away the stories, characters, the colourful worlds and you have yet another generic shooter/dungeon crawler. I can pick among dozens of such titles already.

Cinematic storytelling is an INTEGRAL part of the Mass Effect experience. They should not forego that, just so that someone can get their "Skyrim, but in space"-fix.

They clearly arent sticking to their so called strengths as proven with Inquisition. They want the skyrim market.

Nope bioware has clearly stated they want thier games to be more open world. More exploration for ME:A is already confirmed so nope.

Bioware has made it clear with Inquisition that their cutting back on cinematics cutscenes in favour of more content so lol nope.

Amusing. Considering what followed after that.

Listen, most of the posters either stated their opinion with more words than this discussion seems worth or used a gif which is at least somewhat entertaining.

While you don´t even bother making full sentences. If it is important to you to have a discussion you have to participate in it.
