If a companion is interested in the PC they should be able to outright state so, just because some immature people find it offensive that a gay men is hitting on them doesnt mean companion flirting should outright omitted. Why?

Why is it that the PC always have to be the one to initiate the romance? It breaks immersion and makes characters seem more like props. Please fix this bioware.

If they do this it'll make the straight boys cry (see: Anders).

Why should bioware give a horse arse about what they think?

No one minded Liara or Isabela practically throwing themselves at the PC, that I can remember...

Because in ME1 you have to fight Liara off with a stick if you're not interested in her.  Which gets annoying.

I thought the problem with Anders was that there were only two responds:

1) Let's have sex

2) **** off

But it's been few years since I played DA2, so maybe there's a polite answer as well.

As for companions flirting with main character... why not? I don't really care. It would be refreshing and maybe more natural than just picking "I want to bang you" option in first conversation.

Yeah, Liara was annoying. But that wasn't so much because she made a move on you (Isabela did the same thing almost as soon as you knew her, remember) but because no matter how you answered she seemed to hear a "yes."

Maybe asari don't handle rejection well? Or maybe it's just that the devs couldn't imagine anyone not wanting to bang her

There was no way to rebuff Anders without earning rivalry points.  Granted the number of points you get is something that, over the course of the game, is easily overcome.  But taken on its face, the number of points you get is equal to some truly appalling things Hawke could to to get on Anders' bad side (like, handing the saarabas over to the Qunari)  making it seems like letting Anders down really p*sses him off.

Liara is easy to avoid, just tell her "Let's be friends" when she brings it up. Ashley and Kaidan on the other hand - you have be a jerk to them at least once.

I agree actually.

I didn't think Liara was that bad. She just confesses to Shepard and then you can choose to start a romance or tell her you're not interested in her that way. Kaidan/Ashley on the other hand, unless you're being a total a*shole to them (or let them die) you somehow enter a romance with no option to break it off.

the amount of rivalry points you get is negligible, you can easily make it back if you keep him in your party. I literally never had a problem doing that. I usually managed to complete every friends-with-everyone playthrough without a single problem.

I actually have to tell her "No" TWICE in the same conversation.  Even after telling her  I was interested in Ash instead, she was all like "But you 're interested in me too, right?"

Try harder troll. After the threads (all made by you) advocating FPS perspecitve, side quests with no cinematics, less story and more exploration, I think you can do better.

I'd give you a 5 out of 10 and this because you CAN do better.

Yes, by itself, it's a negligible amount.  +10 Rivalry, but that's the equivalent to

handing Ketojen over the the Qunari, or being cool with Merrill using blood magic to get past the barrier on SUndermount.  It's nearly as bad as handing Grace and the other apostates over to the Templars, and is actually worse than blackmailing Thrask about his mage daughter.

Love hurts, but you get over it. Like blood magic or minor mage oppression...

Players don't respond well to unwelcome advances. That's why it's a bad idea.

Depends on the player and well know what kind does the complaining/whining.

Liara was annoying but there is no reason to get rid companion initiation.  It would be awesome to have that back, instead of the companion just standing in one spot waiting to get flirted with like some cardboard cut out.

Uhh....they don't?

Liara has to be batted off with a stick in the first game and never seems to get the message in multiple games if you inadvertently express something that could be interpreted as even the slightest interest at any point (I.e. not being a huge dick to her).

Kaidan drops not so subtle hints with fair frequency that should be rather obvious given his usually introverted personality.

Miranda engages in what could be construed as mild sexual harrassment if Broshep says something innocuous to the effect of "nice to see you smile for a change" after her loyalty mission.

Jack literally proposes to screw before you can even do the proper "romance."

Thane affectionately starts calling you "siha" (i.e. goddess) out of nowhere because you merely helped him stop being a shitty parent and chose not to be a dick about it by rubbing it in.

Tali has the completely obvious "what could I possibly suggesting?" pass after her mission as well as interpreting the neutral reply that's something to the effect of, "it's too dangerous even if I'm interested" as "I am interested", and has to be explicitly told no.

There are others that have to be pushed a bit but it usually matches their personality. The only thing I find strange is that most of the female LI's seem unusually more aggressive compared to some of the males (Garrus, initially Jacob). Admittely, for the ones who do make passes at you, you have to go and talk to them to advance the subplot, but that is a characteristic of the medium.

Personally I have no problem with having to turn down interest from characters I don't want to romance, but it would be nice to stop a romance with NPCs without ever being a jerk to them. ME1 Kaidan or Anders were not exactly well handled in this regard.

I had no problem in ME1 with Liara making advances. Maybe I picked dialogue that avoided any advances. What bothered me is in ME2 on Illium, my Shepard gets a what-the-crap hug from the asari even after I told her I would throw her back in the volcano in ME1
