I liked ME1's achievements. Some of them felt somewhat challenging and - unless I recall incorrectly - there weren't any "congrats you completed horizon" -type of achievements. Those felt pretty cheap and empty.

As to whether achievement bonuses are necessary: I liked getting the option to choose a bonus talent after using it a bunch of times in the affiliated class, but I'm not sure about the xp and health regen -type bonuses. They can make a game easier on harder difficulties (perhaps increasing replayability) but not every player wants the game to get easier on subsequent playthroughs.

I found the achievements in Mass Effect 1 to be pretty close to what was in Mass Effect 2 and 3, for there are ones like "completed the majority of the game with a specific squad member" or "get 150 kills with a certain weapon or power". (edit: There was an achievement for completing the four primary missions).

Here is a link to the achievement lists: Mass Effect Wiki Achievements

Looking back at what you get from achievements in Mass Effect 1 those bonuses aside from the experience bonus have been incorporated into Mass Effect 2 and 3 in different ways, such as bonus powers from your squad is based on how you interact with them instead of using a power a certain number of times. If they do add something to the game for achievements I would only want it to be cosmetic such as a display of ships or fish in the captain's cabin in Mass Effect 2 and 3. I don't see any benefit to giving damage boosts that way for it doesn't seem to add anything to the game play experience for if you want to kill enemies faster you can always just drop the difficulty.
