I've been running this latest game with Solas and Cole in my party almost all the time, so I'm getting to hear most of their game banter together. Now I think I understand so much better than my first games, what Solas is saying to Cole. At this point in my latest game, I haven't done Cole's personal quest, so I haven't chosen for him to be more human or spirit (I always choose human).

After playing Trespasser and seeing how ruthless Solas is towards getting what he wants, even with my IQs who are all on the best to terms with Solas, I'm very afraid for Cole. :(  If Cole is more spirit, then I'm sure that Solas will use Cole, no matter how much that hurts Cole, against anyone who tries to get in the way of what Solas wants.

If Cole is more human, like I always make him, I can see Cole not allowing Solas to use him and even being against what Solas wants to do even though Cole might feel compassion for the people in the past. Hopefully Cole's compassion will allow him to feel even more for the people in the present and keep Solas from using him.

Yikes, Cole even wanted Solas to bind him to Solas. Hope Solas doesn't take him up on that offer, if Cole's still a spirit.

Of course, who knows what the writers will do with the characters. I just hope that Cole isn't destroyed. He's one of my favorite non-romance characters.  :)

I just got some dom-sub slash ideas from this post. My mind is a dark, dark place.

If Cole appears again, I'm not sure his role can be as binary as you make it out. I think he would have to have much the same role to play, otherwise Bio would have to structure the plot in a way that accounts for his actions either helping or fighting Solas coming to the same conclusion.

It was hard to understand what Solas and Cole were talking about but Cole said he wanted "to help too" and that's where I got the idea that Cole might be used to help Solas. But here's to hoping that plot would be too much trouble to write.  :P

I mean, it would be interesting to see, definitely. I guess either as more human or spirit, he could still find Solas and try to talk him down from the ledge...His motives would just vary a bit.

I doubt Cole will be in danger. He wants to help Solas but if that help caused others pain, Cole would cut him down. Cole may be a spirit but he can think for himself and has a very human side to him even if not made human. He also wanted the Inquisitor to bind themselves to Solas too when he was scared, but now that he's seeing clearer, he knows what's what and is no fool.

Yeah, I'm worried for Cole too, robertmarilyn. I suspect whatever you choose Cole will eventually end up getting pulled into Solas' plan in one way or another. I think that is why I like the human Cole ending the best because at least he seems to get a reprieve from the impending craziness and just enjoy his time with Maryden. Cole deserves some happiness.

What does it say about me I'm liking you more and more? I'm just out of likes for the day.

Structuring a plot like that would be hellish I'd think just for the potential divergent factor.

I'd think that in either situation (I never go the spirit route with Cole, I tend to think there's just too much knowledge in the way) Cole wouldn't help Solas because he would realize how many people would get hurt. He may try to help Solas get his pain out, but I doubt it would work.

What would really be interesting is how Cole would react to having to face Solas knowing it's either someone who was his friend or the entire world.

Who empowered the amulet that spirit Cole wears to ward off binding? :bandit:

Maybe Spirit Cole fled back into the Fade because he feared being used by Solas (since Solas's plan will only hurt more people), so until Solas could destroy the Veil, Cole is safe in the Fade for now, not being used to further Solas's plans. Solas might still be able to bring him from the Fade with all his knowledge but at least Cole could make it difficult.

But all-in-all, I do not see Spirit Cole as a willing servant of Solas.

Most of the banter between Cole and Solas is actually about movies-- mostly movies about angels.  Make of that what you will.

I'm not sure that Solas wants to use spirit Cole.   I do suspect the reason he was so anxious that Cole remain more spirit is that whatever he has planned will harm a more human Cole.

That said, I do think that Solas has had an undue and rather disturbing influence on Cole anyway.    Cole is meant to be a spirit of compassion.    After passing through the ancient library and hearing the distress in the voices of those who became trapped there by his actions and effectively abandoned to starve when he went to sleep, I do wonder that Cole is so absolutely on Solas' side.    When we are racing to get to him he actually says words to the effect that he is "a good wolf".    Where on earth is that coming from?    Even before catching up with Solas we have been told that he gave the orb to Corypheus (still would like to know how the Qunari knew this) and thus all the pain and suffering that people endured from the Conclave onwards was really down to that deliberate action on the part of Solas.     Cole would know this.   If he can read the minds of our companions, he must to a large extent be able to read the mind of Solas.   However, there is that exchange after the celebration party when if you go to see Cole there seems to be a dialogue taking place between him and Solas in the Fade (or his mind).    Solas then tells him to forget and it would seem that he does and that is why he makes no connection between the "good Wolf" and everything else.    The end slides says that Cole is anticipating suffering in the future and will be there to help; I do wonder whose suffering he is going to alleviate; the people of Thedas as they die or Solas' conscience.

Cole said he would return to the Fade because someone needed him to remind him who he was, and many suspect he was talking about Solas.

I see that Solas has the potential to hurt Cole so much if he uses Cole. Solas has the means to make Cole forget what he does not want him to remember. I hope the things that Cole knows about Solas, that Solas made him forget, can come back to Cole when he needs to remember them the most.

One thing that can be counted on is that Solas friendship with Cole is completely geniune.  I think that's why he refused to bind him - just so there's no temptation to ever abuse his friend.

In the Spirit Cole path (which is the one I picked) he goes back into Fade to find Solas and help him find himself again.

I agree. Solas came to care about those living now because of his friendship/romance with the IQ, if you had a good relationship with him. He ALWAYS cared for those like Cole and because Cole is Compassion, I think Cole means even more to him.

The devs had said that his friendship with Cole was in the game so that you could see the caring side of Solas even without having to befriend him or romance him.  In fact, his romance was added in the first place to make his character more sympathetic.

I don't believe that Solas would ever hurt Cole (but then I also thought that there's no way Solas killed Felassan, and Trespasser jossed that theory).

Same here. I intend to keep Cole more human like. The writers made Spirit Cole childlike and the trickster can easily pull a number on him.

Good point. Now add that Solas is willing to do anything to take the the veil and Cole can be used for the greater good.

Spirit Cole is not stupid.  He knows his friend is hurting and he wants to help.  I did the entire of Trespasser with Spirit Cole in my party and his dialouge makes it very clear that he cares a great deal for Solas and wants to help him find himself again.  Cole - in particular Spirit!Cole - is being used by writers to see that there's still good in Solas and it's worth trying to save him.

He does.  He spends the entire DLC trying to explain - in a Cole way - that Solas isn't evil and there is still good in him.  And he's the only party member to Greatly Approve if you take the romance dialouge after learning that he's an agent of Fen'Harel.  It's after speaking to Viddasla and it's something like 'I have to help Solas'.  Everyone else disapproves.  Cole Greatly Approves.

For the first time every, I'm playing a non-human...I'm playing a female elf, romancing Solas. I'm trying to ignore that the real me is mad at all the things I know Solas has done so I know my elf IQ will try to do everything she can do to redeem Solas. It's nice that Cole will approve.  :) I don't blame the others for not approving though.

I was a Solas romancer on my first playthrough.  I'm pretty much stuck in the Solas hell thanks to that.  No other romance in the game can quite match up to the emotional intensity and plot relevance.  I'd recommend making Cole more spirit for at least one playthrough.  Apparently Human Cole has a lot less dialouge than Spirit Cole in Trespasser, and his Spirit converstations help reveal a lot about what's going on in Solas' head (two very interesting lines are 'he wanted to give wisdom, not orders' and 'he's not that kind of wolf.')

My last Trespasser play through was with human Cole and I remember him saying "he's not that kind of wolf" as the party was chasing V(whateverhernameis), toward the end of the game. So human Cole says it too...I'm so afraid to make Cole more spirit-like but I think I will do it either in this game or the next one (surely I'll stop playing this game someday).
