I have them all on except the one where you double companion dislike (Fair Weather Friends) and I'm getting one or two trial rewards every time I return to Skyhold.

Doing trials is worthwhile if the additional challenge makes the game more fun, but I wouldn't really say the rewards are worth it if you're finding the Trials themselves tedious

I think some of them are triggered by relevant things happening. So you might get a Trial reward for killing Bears if you have the Bear Trial, you might get a reward for killing promoted enemies with walk softly.

I've played the game so many times that the trials are making the game more fun for me now. I still haven't played on hard or nightmare yet (always normal) so I'm not sure if I'll have the trials on when I play nightmare...I'll have to see how things go on hard, with the trials on. ![]()

I found Walk Softly + Even Ground + Normal difficulty to be about the same intensity as Nightmare with with optimized gear. Yeah, every once in a while you'll run across an enemy that will randomly one-shot you, but apart from that, it's more or less the same. When I did my Nightmare run after playing Normal with trials turned on, I still played with both Walk Softly and Even Ground on because it was more fun. I left Even Ground on all the way to the end, and didn't turn off Walk Softly until I was level 25 and exploring the Emerald Graves. The Freeman and Red Templars weren't too bad, but the fade rifts were killing me.
Edit: It may depend on the class you play, too. I was playing a Champion specialized Warrior, the most unkillable build, so once he had full guard, he was invincible. Now, I'm playing a mage and I'm finding the early levels a lot harder.

You only get rewards when you're out in the wilderness killing things, and it seems as if you get more rewards from harder monsters. If you're still in the Hinterlands, that might explain it.

Makes sense, though it kind of defeats doing a new game partially for the trial.
Thanks all!

Once you start venturing into the "Level 2" areas, those that are accessible before Skyhold but are still more challenging than the Hinterlands (those with a level recommendation of 8-12, say), you should start gaining rewards with greater frequency. At least that was my experience with them.

I think some are triggered by either events or going to new areas.
I think one of the trials pretty much breaks the game though. I am on a nightmare run and had the trial where it makes random enemies elite and stuff and gives them new abilities and one of the apostates when you find Giselle was so overpowered their barrier wouldn't go down and I had to load an earlier save that was far back enough to turn the trial off so I could continue the quest. A bit of a game breaker if you don't keep multiple saves.

It took me forever to kill those apostates because they were so overpowered. I didn't have to reload, except for the automatic reloading, when my entire party died over and over.
Eventually I managed to get those guys killed but it was HARD and took forever!. ![]()

It wasn't that I was dying it was that I simply could not get through the apostate's barrier. It took forever and whenever I'd be close to making any visible progress on it he'd recast it before I could even touch his health bar. Ain't nobody got time for that. ![]()

I got through it by waiting until one character was left alive, then run back to camp, rest and restock potions, and go back. When you get far enough away, the dead party members respawn but the enemies don't. It still takes forever, but you get there in the end.

Having to go through all that and basically bug my way out of it is not how I want to play the game though

See, I'd do what berelinde did before I'd go back to an old save because I'm hard headed. I ran all over the map in Oblivion because I was too weak to fight a troll. Got half the NPCs killed too. Well, that messed up quests so then I did go back to an old save so that was a bad example. ![]()

It seems random. I only have the one Trial running that halves your XP, and it seemed like I got a reward every few hours.
Keep in mind that all of the descriptions state the possible rate for reward shipments. "Slightly (or Significantly) increases the chance of receiving special shipment rewards in your stronghold." So if a player only has one or two of the "slightly" trials, they will obtain rewards at a slower rate than someone who plays with a "significantly" trial enabled.
You don't have to have them all enabled, of course. If you goal is only to obtain the rewards (that is, you don't care about trial-related achievements), you may only run with the ones that seem the most convenient for you. Hardly ever use focus abilities while exploring? Then why not turn on Rest Easy (resets your focus level to zero every time you return to camp), and so on for all of the trials.

In my oppinion, if you just want the rewards, turn on:
Even Ground
Rest Easy
Grizzly End
is enough.

Dispel is your friend there.

The rewards aren't really worth it. Most of the time it's just random fade touched materials, which I never used becasue I wanted my gear to have guard on hit or heal on hit. You'll occasionally get some decent items like Heart of Despair, but usually the stuff you're crafting is better anyway. Over a whole playthrough with every trial turned on except Fair Weather Friends I received only one schematic, a shield called the Knight's Second. It's a good schematic but not game changing.

Dispel isn't a first-tier ability, you have to drop a point in Barrier and another in Peaceful Aura before you can take it. Since there's not enough XP in Haven to gain more than 4th level before hitting the Crossroads, it may not be a worthwhile investment. Ultimately, you're going to need Dispel, but Energy Barrage might make more sense as a 4th level point spend.

Trial rewards actually have a point-based mechanism. Also, the "significantly" and "slightly" descriptions are misleading, because certain trials require specific actions to generate points.
For the "walking softly" trial, you earn points each time you kill an enemy promoted to elite under the trial. Once you have enough points, you get a reward at your skyhold/haven chest (this mechanic was stated by a bioware employee on reddit, although I can't find the post at the moment). Similarly, for "Grizzly End," you have to actually kill bears to earn points. If you don't kill any bears, having this trial on counts for nothing. For "even grounds," I believe this trial only generates points if you fight enemies that are originally under-level, although I'm not totally sure about this one.
By far the fastest way to generate rewards is the "rub some dirt in it" trial (i.e., the one that reduces healing potion amount to 1 HP). In the course of normal gameplay, this trial possibly generates more trial points than everything else combined.
I had nightmare + all trials (except fair weather friends) on, and got 7 rewards between level 9 and 14.

Yep, it means you have to change the way you play. ;-)

When I go to the chest to get my reward/rewards, I will reload a few times, if I don't like the first few rewards. Yesterday I finally got very lucky with fade touched silverite 5 guard.
So far, when I've gotten good weapons, they will be such a high level that by the time my party can use them, I can make better weapons. ![]()

I think it's up to each player to decide whether the rewards are "worth it," for their own game and play style. Perhaps someone really likes the appearance of one of the weapons? Maybe all they want are the schematics? I've read that those elemental belts are really great for mages.
Also, you can farm the chest until you get the item(s) that you want. So it's not a total crap-shoot.
