The quest "Playing with Fire" no longer wants to fire up. Running around in circle around the statue no longer resurrect grandpa. What should I do ?
Grandpa doesn't want to come out and play

Are you running around it in the right direction?

Keep at it. Stepping even one pixel outside the approved zone will reset the number of time you have to circle the pillar. I hate this quest. I mean, yeah, the +15% spirit resistance belt is nice, but it's a royal pain. Step outside the narrow circle, it resets your progress. Take a tiny step sideways (which doesn't count as circling, apparently), it resets your progress. Meanwhile, every bear, mabari, outlaw, and Red Templar in Hafter's Woods swings by personally to kick your butt (which resets your progress, obv). Blech.

The latest patch changed the quest so now you have to have tapioca pudding and ointment in your inventory when you circle the stone. ![]()

On top of it all, your dang companions are knocking you every which way, as they block your circles.

Just move your party out of the way and open your wheel. Click "Hold position" then run around the statue.

Just move your party out of the way and open your wheel. Click "Hold position," run around the statue 2.5 times only to be pushed out of the way by Cassandra, who thinks "Hold position" is for heretics, click it again, run around the statue 2.5 times only to be pushed out of the way by Solas, who is trolling Cassandra, click "hold position" again, run around the statue 2.5 times only to be pushed out of the way by Varric, who felt left out, then click "hold position" again and run around the statue 2.5 times only to be surprised by a bear. Since "hold position" finally worked this time, the bear eats everyone. Reload and repeat, but this time, it's mabari instead of a bear. Swear a lot. Wait until you're 14th level, set the difficulty to "normal," leave everyone in Skyhold, go to the Hinterlands alone, equip a fire staff or a weapon with a fire rune, then run around the statue.
Fixed it for you.
To be fair, your advice would be good if "hold position" actually worked. For most people, "hold position" is a hotkey for "Push me off the nearest ledge."

I always ran into the statue as I ran around it, so there was no risk of moving too far away from it.

If companions are getting in the way dismiss them all at a camp and do the quest solo.

You also don't have to run. You can just walk around it too. That makes its counter a little more lenient of mistakes.

I am beginning to suspect that by some mad conjunction of spheres and cosmic forces I am the only person in existence of everything, forever, who has never, across any one of my embarrassingly numerous playthroughs, had the slightest bit of problem with that command. I think once, way back in April, Sera might have acted up during the Exalted Plains elven temple puzzle, but that was it.That command has never worked for me in DA:I lol
I think my console may be haunted.
EDIT: AHAHAHA never mind it finally broke (meaning things are as they should be? Odd) in the Forbidden Oasis yesterday. Although truth be told, a lot of things break in the Forbidden Oasis. Chief among them, sanity.

Never had a problem with this quest. In fact, the first time I did it I got an Amulet of Power for Varric. But I have yet to see that happen again, even in pre-patch 3 playthroughs.

I had problems with it when using (I think) the community patch that fixed mosaic tile locations. For whatever reason, grandpa wouldn't trigger. It's worked fine when I didn't have that installed, however. Well, other than the constant interruptions by bears, mabari, outlaws, etc. nearly every time I'm there.

I'm another one for whom hold means, push me off a ledge or, at the least attempt to run over me. Never use it, wish I could remap that slot on the hotbar to something I would use.
Doesn't work in the game, didn't work in Beta, HOLD is just plain broken.

Until my last game finished game, I could never get hold to work. But the last game, when I did that dungeon by the great big hand, where you have to line up the archer statues correctly, I finally got hold to work. What a difference it makes when the keyboard and mouse controls actually work. ![]()
