I recently got level 24 and started playing in Frostback Basin. For some reason, Dorian keeps going down to what looks like 0 hp every fight. He is not able to use healing potions when this happens. Then he just drops dead after about 20 seconds. I haven't actually bought a new ability for him for ages. Is it some kind of new effect of one of his necromancer abilities with recent patches? I haven't played for a while.
Dorian keeps killing himself

Naw. He's just slitting his wrists. Face him, Blood Magic is bad news.
On a more serious note, though, Frostback Basin has some REALLY, REALLY annoying spiders with DoT Poison (Nature) damage. Those things are DPS beasts. Might be your issue. Alternatively, Hakkonite archers and dagger rogues are also pretty bad news for a Mage.

Did you add a fade touched Berserk to his armor or his staff?

Sounds like his simulacrum ability is kicking in. Try deactivating it totally in the tactics section and see if it still occurs.

Whenever I take Dorian dragon hunting he tends to stand in the Dragon's breath ALL THE TIME. He's the only one that needs the healing pots. I think it's a Tevinter thing.

If you can stand it, farm for fade touched Snofleur for a staff for him. It generates 1% heal on hit and basically keeps him from dying. It's magical! Even if he dies and goes into similacrum mode, he'll still generate healing as his spirit hits things and come back to life. Other than that, double check if you crafted something with a beserk masterwork for him and chuck it. Those things kill most chars right quick. It takes a special brand of insanity to know how to properly use them.

He's always complaining about it being cold. Maybe he just wanted to warm up in the fire.

And I thought he was trying to drink himself to death.

Is a little glowy version of Dorian running around? If so, something has knocked him down to 0 HP and his Simulacrum ability activated, as others have said.
My guess is that one of those Hakkonite archers took him out. They have an ability called Hakkon's Wrath that can magnify damage significantly.

If all else fails just get guard per hit weapons and armor.

Yeah i noticed when Dorian's simulacrum ability kicks in, you can try switching to his character, but you won't be able to force him to take healing potions. This is one way to tell if this is the issue. I just let his simi... thing fade out and then either revive him or let him lay there depending on what's at stake.

So, ability that lets him stick around for a few seconds before dying always gets used instead of ability that would actually save his life.

I noticed that some of the players will lose health while just walking. Varric lost 3/4 of his health and we were not in combat. I thought it was a glitch.

The game teleports things around when you're not looking, and sometimes they end up in a weird spot and take phantom fall damage (the amount of damage will vary depending on the particulars).

^Yup. Very prevalent on uneven ground, too.
