Especially if you dont have solas. What reasons could they possibly have?

Well I see you changed the topic completely so I'm erasing my original post.

Better? I was serious about that though.

They consider everyone in the region to either be a mage or a mage sympathizer. And any armed force moving in on the area, like the Inquisition, is a threat to their holy calling.

This. Read some of the codex on the Templars from the Hinterlands. Anyone who could possibly produce a mage ends up being a target.

"We must be ready to fight not only the mages, but those who sympathize with them. Have not the mages blood magic to trick the minds of the unwary? Are not most people as we know them sheep, ready to be led by those who speak with authority? The people must be protected from the mages. It is our right and our duty. But those who supply them with lyrium? Those who offer them comfort and food? Those who shirk their duty to supply us for our worthy fight? They are sympathizers, who have lain with demons and can breed only abominations, and they must be slain as such. We will wage our war from our camp off the West Road, and we will not stop until this world is clean."

So there you have it. If you're not with the rebel templars, then you're against them.

Also, they have to get their supplies from somewhere, so they resort to banditry and stealing from the refugees. The apostates do the same thing. This is a pretty common occurrence in RL warfare.

Because its not a very sensibly written region.

I mean, there are written excuses given but its basically just mages and templars are attacking everybody because the story requires there be chaos, the open world regions seemingly require universal enemies and having both sides be essentially rabid is the laziest way to do it.

Alternatively if you go by the cutscene that opens things up its because the Inquisition attacked both sides when it moved in to take over.

This.  In order to make the story work, Bioware handed out the idiot ball liberally to both mages and templars alike.

I honestly didn't mind it. I liked that it showed that not all of the templars and mages were of one mind and some were even further gone than their main forces.

Yeah, I'm glad Harding is in subterfuge rather than diplomacy. Her solution to bringing peace to the Crossroads is to shoot everyone in the face.

Granted, the cutscene is out of context and for all we know, the mage she shot was just about to attack a peasant rather than another templar.

As well as the Grey Wardens and anyone else who needed to do something absurd, stupid, or generally irrational for plot reasons.

And her solution to "help" a lyrium-addled Cullen is murder.

Some people really need an arrow in the face, though.

You call it murder, I call it "putting one out of their misery"

Cullen would be a husk, not remembering his name anymore. Without anyone to properly take care of him, death is a mercy.

Plus, nothing states she did actually kill him. The slide states that she either left him coin, or killed him... and leaves a remark that neither is certain, leaving for the player to decide.

Moral of the story, keep him off the juice otherwise his future is bleak...

There's a war going on between mages and Templars. And apperately it implies they attack anyone that's not them.

There's only one reason, son. Because they are high on drugs. Aka Lyrium.

Keep your kids away from that crap. Or next thing you know, they'll start hearing voices and thinking everyone is a blood mage in disguise.

Enchanter Ellendra's lover Mattrin actually commits suicide because he's afraid he'll go crazy like the other Templars and start murdering people.
