At  risk of being possibly lynched this is a question i have been curious about for awhile, has anyone ever wanted  Bioware to make a game and instead of all the writing etc they put in to romances, shift it all to main quest etc.

Basically remove romances in favor of a really  well done story, Nothing against  romances i just sometimes i feel they take away from what the story could  be.

I don't think the romances take away from the main story at all.

I would like them to establish the new world more before worrying about side content, but that side content is one of the main selling points of their games that falls under the blanket category of: 'Characters'. And characters can fall in love, betray one another, et cetera. To remove elements of their character-writing process could and most likely would be detrimental to their way of operating.

Why does it have to be an either/or though?

If the main story isn't up to snuff getting rid of romances isn't going to make it great. Romances aren't some huge resource/creative drain.

The romance give us something to see ourselves reflected with the main character, to make it "real", BioWare will continue doing it ... so if you do not like it isn't required to pursue a romance, you can chose...is a bioware game after all.

Yeah, im sure the fifteen lines and two cutscenes every romance consists of is going to break the budget.

They'd get lynched though.

I'm already quite happy with the length of the previous Mass Effect games, so I don't feel it needs more in terms of quantity. And I don't think cutting romances (or anything else) can automatically translate into better writing. Maybe more polished cutscenes and stuff? But again, it doesn't feel like it's a department that lacks a lot of polish (with a few exceptions, like spinning DLC Aria).

On the other hand, romances provide a lot of value for many players. Just see how passionately people discuss their romance options - taking that away from them for some intangible 'extra polish' doesn't seem worth the trade to me, personally. That said, I'd be fine with a Bioware game where they decided to lay off the whole romancing, like for the unannounced IP they're working on, or for a future Mass Effect game where they just aren't 'feeling it' or where it doesn't make sense because of the story's premise or whatever. I don't want them adding it just because it's expected by a portion of the playerbase.

If writing a good main story was as simple as adding more lines then Assassin's Creed would have a plot that made sense.

You know something? There are a lot of RPG games out there with no romance at all, why don't people play those games instead of complaining about how romance ruin the game? There are not a lot of games with romances, especially moreso for gays and even women, and not a lot of games incorporate romance into the game like Bioware. Bioware' gameplay, graphic, and general contents are subpar compared to many other competitions out there. You're basically taking away an aspect that make Bioware games unique, which I don't think is wise.

If they removed the romances, it would just mean there aren't any romances. I doubt it would affect the main story at all. At most, they might decide to improve platonic relationships between the protag and team instead.

Though I have a feeling that if romance was dropped, we'd simply see the exact same game, but without romance side-stories.

Basically this. I love the unique combination of story and romances, it adds a lot of depth to a character's relationship with others. Sure I could live without romances, but then plenty of games are like that already... and with BW games I even can always decide to not romance anyone if I don't feel like it. So the option is already there, both fractions of players can be satisfied.

Like many others in here I don't think taking away romances would improve anything in the story department. Also, "improve" is a wide term. They can use more resources on story, and still not all players will like it. As always.

Nope because i don't equate it as an either or. Good romances add to a good story not subtract. So a good story is weaker if it fails to account for a huge aspect of life.

That is plainly nonsense. In fact, closer to the exact opposite is true.

If a writer has nothing meaningful to say about a theme or idea, it should not be significantly present in the story.

As for the question, I have certainly enjoyed some of the romances, but I would hope the ME team is smart enough to understand and implement that 'feels' are not a substitute for competent writing, something that seems to have escaped the grasp of the DA team. As it is, the ME team has done a significantly better job with romances, so I'm willing to give them some benefit of the doubt.

This is a story about a group of physically, mentally, and socially adept (read attractive) people on a really long one way trip to COLONIZE. Somebody's gonna hook up.

I bet they're going to use the bathroom at some points, too.

But just because something happens, doesn't mean we tell a story about it, hmm?

Agree 100%. It would be an idiotic move to remove the romances from the game.

Toilet humor is pretty prevalent in fiction. And this story will inevitably be about people and people hook up.

Because it's a BioWare game and people have come to expect it out of them. Not because it's necessarily good.

That imperative got written way before the ark. Or the commandments.

I really hope that BioWare is going to come up with something smarter than an 'Ark,' but experience has taught me they are pretty worthless at coming up with satisfying answers to questions the narrative has proposed.

Coming up with total surprises, they can do. But having players know a problem needs to be solved and then be in a position of having to come up with a solution? Can't think of any examples done well.

Well, if you cut all the romances, all the sidequests, all the gunfight, all the musics, all the grafic improvement, all the map, the multiplayer and everything else... will it be a better game with a better story?

Don't know why, but a lot of people on this forum has a very bad feeling about the Bioware team, like they can't work at their full potential if you don't cut a lot of features of a game...
