Don't know why, but a lot of people on this forum has a very bad feeling about the Bioware team, like they can't work at their full potential if you don't cut a lot of features of a game...

You've never heard the saying that a thing becomes beautiful not when there's nothing left to add, but when there's nothing left to take away?

Some great points here that i had not considered. I am not actually advocating for removal of romances, was mostly curious what others  thoughts are on them if they detract from the game  etc. It is clear many appreciate the romances of the  Bioware games, and other companies seem to be following Biowares lead on romances, even Fallout 4 will supposedly  have  them  though  i am unsure if that was ever  confirmed.

Yes, but that is not even a popular truth, let alone a universal one. By that reasoning Pong is the peak of all gaming. It's a fine game, proving that less is sometimes more, however more can in fact be more.

True enough. It is just a saying. Although I think it just refers to cutting unneeded fluff.

Little of topic but...

Bethesda's Head of Marketing, Pete Hines, clarified that you can only romance the human companions. New Fallout 4 details were revealed at a Quakecon-exclusive demo today. Up to 12 companions will be available to join players in the post-apocalyptic RPG. Players will also be able romance those companions, regardless of gender.

Bit of a disappointment they're all bisexual, but I suppose we have no clue how deep these companions are in the first place.

So it was  confirmed thanks for pointing it  out, Will be interesting to see  how  Bethesda does, don't think they have ever  tried this before. Minus the limited marriage stuff  from Skyrim heh

Only human but ghoul is technically human so we have hope.

Otherwise we get to claim racism so it's a win win either way!

Hopefully they'll do it well. Anyways, it will at least eliminate all that wailing about characters that can't be romanced, like some people wanted to romance Sera with a male character, etc. I don't mind, actually. At the very least, it leaves more guys for my female and male characters to choose from. ^_^

I don't really know what would be better use for those resources. Romances help us to define protagonist more and his/her relationship with other characters, it adds character content into game and adds lot of replay-value to the game as well. So I don't really know if pouring romance resources to story content would really make game better.

There are considerations beyond resources.

instead of all the writing etc they put in to romances, shift it all to main quest etc.

Romances are the main quest.

No, part of why i love bioware games are the characters and romances. Actuality the biggest part

Good characters are precisely the reason why romances should be looked at.

If BioWare thinks they're done because they have a kissy scene or friendship scene or some other nonsense, if that's all they have to offer, it's not a good character.

Competent writing is built on conflicts. Not kisses, and ultimately not friendship. Although those can certainly be a part, even a very significant part, but they always come second.

Character interaction is about the only thing that Bioware do really, really well though...

The main plot-lines are formulaic, the side-content generic or just downright tedious (planet scanning in ME2 for instance), the graphics are generally OK but they can't do decent rocks or hair and they're way behind the curve on dynamic lighting, particle effects and weather. The sounds effects are normally pretty good, as is the music, but they're not outstanding... not even as good as Metro IMO.

BioWare do excel at characters and dialogue though; nobody does that aspect of games better - so reducing PC/NPC interaction would actually be a really bad move.

^I agree. The thing that has me the most interested in Andromeda is the cast we'll be taking along in the wilds of the new galaxy.

I would like to see a sequel to Pong. Excellent game.

A romance is part of that characters story.

When as writer takes on the writing of a character, that's part of that package. It doesn't take any more time or effort away from the main story than a non romanceable character does.

If the romances take away from the main story, then party members do, as a romance is part of that party members package.

And to answer your question, I could live without it, but I enjoy the inclusion so would rather not.

I see little reason to ever get rid of this sort of thing in some form or another. Even The Witcher, which some treat as the second coming, uses this to add more meat to Geralt's personal story. It's an important part of life and a huge part of fiction and adds a great deal for the reader/viewer/player. Some of my favorite companion moments are specifically the romance-related ones, like the kiss at the end of LotSB or the romance version of the asari farewell in ME3 (though I really like the friendship one too). I don't see the game being better without them. Anyone who disagrees simply has the option to refuse or ignore them.

There's a Barcade a few blocks from me that has one of the old arcade consoles still running. Sometimes it's nice to kick back beer with some people and play it, though I can't get enough of the old TMNT game XD
