Hello. I've been reading some stuff about this guy (or gal).

I haven't seen a build with Rank 6 Lifting Shockwave yet in order to prime and then detonate with Nova.

Is that a bad idea to do that? Or mostly it's because you're not supposed to do anything else other than Charge?

could be fun, but the priming window is very short, so u ll need practicing to detonate lifting shocwave with charge or nova

Anyway, most of the novaguard lovers play the no sw build

take a look at deerber's vid on how to vanguard :)

well its mostly on how to charge sync kill units

I have seen a build with no charge, detonating shockwave lift. But it's so hard, and risky.

My 2 builds are that one is a biotic charge>nova build and my other is a weapons platform which uses shockwave for detonating ammo and charge for detonating ammo and gaining shields.

The standard Novaguard build is without shockwave. Use a light weapon that packs a punch and has high burst DPS. Talon is ideal. You charge, shoot, nova, shoot, nova, shoot and repeat. It's very effective when paired with disruptor ammo, and extremely survivable when played right, thanks to the I-frames of both charge and Nova. If you'd like, I'm sure I can find some footage on how to do it, or in the off case that there isn't much I can record some myself. The only Novaguard specific video I have up myself is with a Claymore, which forces a pretty different playstyle. Tons of fun, but probably not the best way to do it nor to approach the Novaguard.

There is also a minority of users who advocate a no fitness, lifting shockwave build. If good ol' EroticMass reads this, I'm sure he'll be down to give a lot of useful info about that. I have never tried it myself, since unlike many I do not find the standard way of playing the class boring. It's definitely a good possibility, although maybe harder to use than the standard build, and arguably not as effective.

Short priming window, only effects health, and I'm not 100% certain the detonate evolution is just for combos detonated by shockwave or also for ones set up by shockwave. Basically it may be an interesting experiment for a few games, but the tried and true way to dominate with the novaguard is how Deeber explained above. The only difference between my two vanilla human vanguards is the male uses half blast 5b, and my female uses power recharge 5a and drops rank 6 in passives for 3 ranks in shockwave for ranged detonations when nova or charge aren't ideal. I barely play her though.

If you really want to try lifting shockwave, the Krogan Shaman offers more survivability. Acolyte->Shockwave->Melee->Barrier Detonation for shields mooks with health. Acolyte->Warp->Melee->Barrier Detonation for armored mooks.  Warp->Wraith->Shockwave for bosses.

^^^What they all said. When creating a Human Vanguard build with Lifting shockwave its better to use it more like a detonating power for ammo types and/or to stagger enemies in order to get a better shot and/or stop the enemy from charging you and/or shooting you.

That kind of build is good for an off host vanguard player that is concerned with lag and timing of charge to nova. If I were creating that kind of build though I'd leave Nova out and just have biotic charge and lifting shockwave. Biotic charge is too good to leave out due to it also restoring your shields.

Kind of like this:

Skipping Nova was punishable by death in the empire. Skip fitness, or passives at most, or split them, but for Amonkira's sake, don't skip Nova.

However, you did put up a valid point with the off host thing. I never play vanguards off host, but I can imagine a shockwave centric build being easier to play.

Thanks for the tips.

I played the Vanguard (no Shockwave) for 3 horus this morning. Host and off host. The difference is ridiculous. I was doing very very well as host. I started a Silver solo and around w2 or 3, people started joining.

The character is very good but it's very risky, more than in the SP. Sometimes Charge won't trigger for some reason and then you're almost dead.

I'm using the Katana and that shotgun is meh.

I need a Wraith X :P

No you don't, ...

Novaguard with Nova(5) Power Recharge has amazing fast Cool Downs, that you don't have time for shooting.

At least on Silver and the first Gold Waves.

I run the novaguard with maxed charge, nova and power passive. I've got a few points into both shockwave and fitness. Charge + nova is one of the most natural combos in the game. Shockwave is decent for those situations where you're fighting something that you reeeeaaaaaally don't want to be close to. Shockwave also gives you an option for dealing with guardians, so that's more options you'll have for weapon mods. I'd recommend keeping your power cooldown at 150% or greater. Shotguns, SMG's or certain pistols are probably going to be your most effective weapons on that class. Be wary of lag, it WILL disable charge AND nova at the worst possible times.

Since you have two identical human vanguards, you could spec one without SW and one with lifting SW.

One of my HVs are specced for lifting shockwave + nova combo. Hosting is crucial with this more than the no-SW. This build is going to be weak against heavy armor on it's own but if there are AoE primers in your team, then he is a near-perfect detonator with 3 powers!

Typical Vanguard for you- Biotic Charge works WAY better on host.

Learn to Nova cancel. This will help save you from getting dropped.

You start the Nova animation then roll dodge before the Nova goes off, this will provide you with brief invulnerability. As this is not an attack, only use it when you have charged into a bad situation, and use this technique to give your BC time to cooldown.

Also experiment with Charge / Heavy Melee / Nova, as the heavy melee does provide damage reduction.

I nova cancel with melee. But it's not nothing that comes naturally in the midst of combat. My BC cd is 3.67 seconds, so in this meantime I may shoot/recharge/melee. I'm not comfortable with the ideia of nova cancelling like that yet.

Plus, it doesn't work well off host.

But maybe I'll get there.I might check videos on nova cancelling under pressure.

I'm thinking of doing the same. I'm about 80% of the way to joining the mustard race when Andromeda drops
