I think I know what a illusive problem was with the game.  You know how earlier BW games went to great lengths at there beginnings, to wrap the story around the player?  Well, in Inquisition it's more half-arsed, making the player do all of the work.   So it's not entirely down to the abundance of fetch quests.

Definitely agree with the whole 'don't feel that you have to stay in the Hinterlands and get everything done before moving on'. As much as I love the game, Hinterlands has become my Fade Tower portion of Inquisition. Difference is I can come and go from it as and when I need/feel, so no need for a 'skip the fade mod' this time lol.

Gah! Fade Tower... The burning. The only place I ever loathed more was the opening dungeon in BG2.

Dungeon be Gone is your friend.

My quest pickup goes something like this

Spoiler

Finishing the major story beats gets power back, though I can't remember how much. So power shouldn't really be an issue especially closing rifts as you go, which plot wise you should be doing anyway.

After that there are so many area choices, once you get you feet, things shouldn't feel grindy because you don't have to stay in one area.

That I think was the big problem. We were funneled through one area for so long before things opened up. Even lovely enviromentals get tiresome after awhile.

Tl;dr a way to do stuff to keep perspective fresh pre In Your Heart Shall Burn.

That's the direction I naturally went in my first time through. Took, I dunno, maybe two hours before I finally got around to doing the thing we'd come to the Hinterlands for, and by that time I'd stacked up plenty of Power. What I found myself wanting was more Influence, actually, since I already knew what I wanted to spend that on

At that point my Quizzy had RP reasons to stick around and help out the refugees some, so he did. YMMV.

I think the game is finally winning me over.  The thought comes after me receiving this strange tingling feeling, which in some degree is tempting me to buy the remaining DLC before I progress much further.  I have criticised, rubbished, and alienated this game since shortly after it's release.  I declared war on the game and it's creators.  I like to win my wars, so why this time, do I feel HAPPY that I may be losing the battle?  ;)

I know you have already started over and stated that you don't want to buy Tresspasser yet in order to have it like a carrot ;.-) BUT...you do get new game mechanics there with the upgrades and trials that, at least for me, makes the game more diverse and give us the possibility to really tailor the difficulty level to personal taste.

About power cost, Fallow mire costs 8 but going all the way along the main path will give you it all back provided you do the Beacons, Beneath and the camp.

No, I had already bought Trespasser before I began, as the carrot to keep me going.  :)  Sorry for the confusion.  The DLC's I was tempted to buy are Jaws and Decent.

Pity you bought that. Amazon's got the GOTY for $40. (I think their retailer split with EA is 50%, so I guess they've decided to make only $10 on the sale.)

Eh... I've done that too. I think I was at 8 or 9 before I finally fell into a character I liked, was pleased with how she was spec'd and then vowed to complete the game by doing every mission, killing every dragon, etc... and I did and it was amazing! I found the more side quests you do, and the more you read the codex entries and play it out in a certain order, the more lost in the story and game you become. By the end I was sad to say goodbye to Cia, but she was my wonderful human Rogue who was an Assassin Archer who was so leveled up, the final baddie died in 30 seconds and his pet took only a minute. Maker bless Hidden Blades!!

Speaking of power, I went power mad in my perfect game and ended up with nearly 300 by Trespasser LOL but yeah that is one of the best judgments.

I also have a habit of playing many playthroughs, but not because I get bored or find any issue in the game.

No, on the contrary, I love the game so much that I scrutinize every minute detail and decision, trying to craft the perfect playthrough.

It is a curse, but I love it. I hope others can relate.

Dunno about that. I found the whole game a hard slog. If anything, I felt like In Your Heart Shall Burn was the high point of the game and it just kind of meandered along after that.

Bioware games are like books.  Some books have you hooked by the first page (Most Bioware games).  Some books need you to negotiate a chapter or two before finally grabbing your attention (Inquisition)

In this case the point is very specific and you are missing it ;-), but no spoilers! =)

I did reach the end game with my first playthrough but I skipped 3 entire zones to do it (emprise du lion, exalted plains and emerald graves) because they weren't tied to the main plot.

Now I started a new playthrough and I decided to do the entire zones, the problem is that you get a little too overpowered, I'm doing the Winter Place plot right now at lvl20.

Well, it's a bit late for this for you now, but in the future you can turn on the trials to halve your xp if you want to slow things down a bit.

What did I miss? I did every quest and zone in the game and completed all but about three achievements. I'm honestly not sure what I could have missed that could radically alter my opinion of the game.

It is not that, I am referring to the very specific point we are alluding to. Not the whole game post IYHSB. The final consequence of the Fallow Mire. ;-)
