Hello everyone,

Been doing some poking around lore forums and have started to come up with a crazy theory. Everyone get out your tinfoil hats here this is a wild one.

So the idea...what if the nightmare demon from inquisition is really the mastermind of all of thedas's current problems.

The taking points...It's involved so forgive me if I ramble. What we know for sure is that Cory and crew went to the fade physically. They came back tainted. The worship of the old gods had begun to wane in the empire and the priests were desperate. They heard someone (nightmare in this theory) tell them to enter the golden city for power. Desperate and believing their gods were helping they seized on the plan. They preformed the ritual and opened a gate to enter the golden city (put on tinfoil hat) only to be dragged into nightmare's domain where Cory saw a blackened city and an empty throne(probably cory's greatest fear and his is the only first hand account we have). In his realm nightmare corrupts and twists the magisters and then when he's exhausted them as a food source sends them back all full of demon created blight to spread over the world and sow greater fear spurring fantastic nightmares.

This also helps explain why abominations look all tainty and why the corruption in the mage tower in DA:O looked so much like darkspawn blight-growths. Because they're all linked together stemming from the same place essentially.

Pretty sure there are some gaping holes in here and does nothing to resolve FlemSolMytHarel's tale save for indirectly giving fen'harel credit for the blight.

Hmm...just occurred to me...This might explain Solas's guilt...It's really getting foily now...old gods are elf gods aka fen'harel's buddies (sort of), he did his whole veil thing and this gave nightmare a chance to create the blight which tainted his buddies causing them to go all "archdemon smash" on the world. Now he's guilt ridden having wrought all this death and destruction.

This also might explain flemeth/mythal's desire to save the old god's souls...even though she's bitter about the whole being murdered thing no one deserves to be tainted

Tl/dr-nightmare created the blight for giggles

That's my story...what do you guys think?

I actually had a thought that Mythal was the one causing shite in Thedas for shits and giggles.

I've heard much crazier theories!  I've even spun some crazier ones.

My own thought is that Nightmare was just an opportunist.  The thing about demons is they have no creativity.  I doubt it would have come up with all this on its own.

That said, there does seem to be some connection between demons and blight, and the blight did come from the Fade.  I've come to believe that the Old Gods were powerful demons themselves locked into the bodies of dragons in exactly the same way Hakkon was.  Yet even demons avoid the Black City.

As for Solas's guilt, I suspect it's simply what it was - the world he created is so much worse than he expected.  And like the Fade sequences tells us, he's afraid of dying alone.  Modern Theodosians don't count because they seem like Tranquil to him.

I do wonder what he knows about the Blight, though.  He always seems cagey about it.  He hates Wardens, hates helping Wardens, hates their idea to hunt down an old god, but claims the old gods had no connection to the elven gods.  With all the other secrets he was keeping, all that got glossed over.

Thanks for the feedback, though I'd argue this isn't necessarily true...It's just what we've been told by the chantry. Cole created himself and spirits and demons create all sorts of things in the fade...that they're based on reality doesn't mean anything...after all they're not prefect copies therefore the spirits must have altered (ie creativity) what they saw

It's confirmed that the demons don't understand the taint, and do go near it. Cole and the Justinia Spirit both confirm that the Nightmare began as a spirit of compassion who took on people's fears and pain in order to help them, but eventually was corrupted and began to feed off such things.

It's also confirmed that the Nightmare serves Corypheus. Once the Nightmare is defeated, Corypheus discards it as useless. It still exists though, and if the Veil falls, I'm sure it will engage in some hilarious antics with the various life forms.
