Who could Celene name as an heir?

One of the main reasons some of the nobles don't like her is that she has no heir, and given that she's getting older and has already rejected Gaspard's proposal, the chances of a new heir born are unlikely. Who could she name as her heir, then?

Nobody, she ded.

If there was any actual afterlife in Dragon Age, I would hope she is paying for her genocidal ways.

I'm not sure it works entirely like that anyway.    If the situation when Celene came to the throne is anything to go by then the Council of Heralds decides who takes the throne.    So if she leaves no heir they would look at if there were any nobles with a blood connection and otherwise it would likely go to whoever could manipulate them into giving them the nod.     I'm not entirely sure but since Gaspard was married in the past, possibly he does have heirs, in which case they might be regarded as the next in line to the throne.    Just because Gaspard was executed (if that is what you do), that doesn't necessarily debar his children from the succession.

Celene is very much modelled on Elizabeth I of England.    She executed her cousin Mary, Queen of Scots, who had a legitimate claim to the throne (at least from the Catholic point of view), but then nominated her son, James as her heir.    In fact the reason he didn't make more fuss about the death of his mother was that he probably didn't want to harm his chances of inheriting.   Since he had been brought up a Protestant, the English parliament had no problem with endorsing him as Elizabeth's successor.    So a similar situation could arise with Orlais, particularly if Gaspard's children distanced themselves from his actions and didn't try and move against Celene while she is still alive.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of Valmonts left, you have to go quite far back to find possible descendants: Celene's great-aunt Grand Duchess Leontine's descendants (she's probably King Meghren's mother, and he's said to have had a brother) though they wouldn't have the Valmont name. There's also the possibility that one of Grand Duke Gratien's granddaughter survived the massacre of her family, but if so she hasn't made herself known and is already quite far removed from Celene. So unless she chooses one of Gaspard or Florianne's children (if they have them, it's not mentioned anywhere), Celene doesn't have a lot of options if she sticks with Valmonts.

At this point I'd say the best candidate outside of the Valmonts would be Cyril de Montfort: he's a Duke, on the council of Heralds, seems to be trusted enough to serve as Orlais' ambassador at the Exalted Council, and Celene's second cousin (Celene's mother and Prosper were cousins, and apparently close).

Looking up the potential heirs of Celene and Gaspard took me to the DA wiki, a perilous undertaking capable of wasting literally hours, where I rediscovered the codex entry for the Puzzle Ring of the Black Fox.

Am I the only one who thinks this would make an outstanding mod adventure?

In Orlais, they say there are ten of these rings, one for each finger, and that the Black Fox was never without a single one. Some claim each represented a conquest; others: that they were reminders of secrets the he kept; still others: that they carried an inscription that, if all the rings were assembled as one, told the location of the Black Fox's stronghold.
Many nobles in Val Royeaux have claimed to own one or more of the rings, but nobody has ever found them all. Their secret, if there is one, is safe to this day.

I like Cyril de Montfort.* If we wind up in Orlais again, I wouldn't mind if he wound up as emperor.

*I actually like him a great deal, and I always feel guilty about misleading him in Mark of the Assassin... but it's better than drugging his wine or clubbing him over the head, I suppose.

Thedosian royals and nobles seem to be really bad at breeding. They're always short of heirs. Except the Montilyets I guess

Further away from the throne they seem to be doing OK, but both the King and the Kings brother are childless

I assume (depending on your choices) her and Briala could adopt? Then she could name that child the heir? Otherwise some 3rd cousin somewhere or another.

Is adoption even allowed in Orlesian nobility/royalty?

I'm sure adoption is allowed, but if Orlais works anything like the RL Anglo-France Royal traditions, such a child would not be in line for the throne.  They'd be most likely styled a prince or princess but (in the English Parlance) would not be entitled to be called "HRH".  Of course the Council of Heralds has the power to decide differently (as does British Parliament IRL) but they almost certainly wouldn't since blood ties seem to be very important in Orlesian title claims.

Seems to be all the rage in the ferelden and orlesian court to be infertile.

No excuse for Celene though. Maybe she would've been able to produce an heir if she just stopped chasings skirts for a night. For all the talk about the grand future she will lead Orlais into, she seems to be rather desinterested in the fact that it will explode into another civil war the second she drops dead without another heir.

That's alright.  I usually solve that little problem for her.
