Reading all the negatives -- some of which I already see (I'm only a couple hours into ME2) -- has changed me.

Now, I'm determined to try to like ME2 for what it is -- not dislike it for what I hoped it would be.

Its a challenge. Nevertheless, do we really want to be "challenged" to "like" a game.

No and there is a reason you go back to a developer. I dont expect the people that make Command and Conquer to make a good RPG.(westwood and now EA LA) i dont expect Ininfinity Ward to make a good RPG. I expect Bioware who has set the standards for over a decade in RPGs to make a good one though.

i want actual chrarcter customization. i want armor to mean something and be able to upgrade my teams armor to keep them in the fight.

i want my weapons to be upgradable. i want a variety of weapons that can accomplish the same task to be usable. i also want to customize what weapons i carry on a mission. i find it to be pretty dumb that a soldier cant use an SMG as well. the option to dump the shotgun for an smg would be a great trade off.

i want weaponry specializations. if i constantly use a weapon i should get better with it.

i want the party banter. pretty mcuh just feels like whoever i take is just along for the ride.

i want to feel like i am actually doing something. i save someones life and later on i get an email saying thanks.

the mission complete screen needs to go. it serves no purpose. the money transfered to my account from cerebus should be handled through my assistant.
Kelly says,"Command you have been paid $xxxxx for your sucessful mission."
or just tie it in with your emails.

i want to build weapons. taking the ammo types and making them a special ability doesnt work for me. i would rather build a weapon before the mission to fit what i am fighting.

The ammo system. really the heat sinks are square in the weapon but the pick up looks like a flashlight. also where are you carrying all these spare heat sinks. your armor doesnt have pockets or pouches. might as well have an inventory system then. you pull heat sinks out of your ass why not a new set of armor:P

take the combat system from ME2 and tweak the RPG and inventory system from ME1. you should have a game then that caters to almost everyone. do i need 100 guns that are the same no. but i do need some type of variety. weapons need stats too the show you why one is better then the other. keep it simple

accuracy 1-10
damage 1-10
fire rate 1-10
reload rate 1-10
magazine size XXX amount
fire rate semi 3rd burst 5 round burst auto (would love to see selective fire and or weapon attachments like scopes, front grips, lasers)

i could deal with it being that simple. 1 being low and 10 being high.

I'm surprised so many people think it's not a real RPG simply because of some rules/inventory changes. RPG = Role-Playing Game. What makes an RPG is the ability to play your character the way you choose to. The story. Being "good" or "bad", or however you define your behavior. The exact rules, the way the combat works, the inventory system, whether they're there or not, are all secondary to this, just the systems to support the true core of the game. The story and especially the conversations are what really makes it an RPG. As long as they're still there, it is an RPG.

What? How is the economy useless? Did you even bother to check out the shops lol. There are a bunch of upgrades you can buy for guns and armor. Not to mention all the stuff you can find. Money is actually useful now and not just something you get and never use like in ME1, now THAT was a useless economy. Other then that one quest with the hanar in the Citidel you basically did not need any cash, until you got to 50 and bought spectre gear.

The gun classes are to restricted what if i wanted to be an adept with an assult rifle i could in the first but not in me2 although i wouldnt be very proficent with it unless i equiped it after using it in a play though and getting the achievment ..... and thats a whole other story.

Now correct me if I'm wrong but I am pretty sure that you can learn other weapons later on in the game. My memory on this is fuzzy but I am quite sure that it was mentioned in one of the interviews/vids.

in the first hour of play i had almost 20 achievments.

This is bull**** pure and simple. You did not get 20 achievments. I have been playing for 10+ hours now have only like 7. What you did get was points towards an achievement. Everytime you do something that goes towards an achievement, such as a headshot, you get a notification in the lower left screen that shows your updated achievement score.

the story so far is good although it seems like the only reason what hapens to shepard in the begining(no spoiler) is for a time filler to adavance the game whcih im sure there some better ideas out there than that.

I think it was done quite well, but thats just a personal opinion.

Event thoughthe mako was terrible and all planets had the same gravity and a million other quips about it the explortation was one of the fun things in me1 being in space and exploring the universe seeing whats out there.

Ok this reallly astounds me. It sounds like you don't want an RPG really but Real Life. Even if you don't and I am misunderstanding you, you should appreciate the fact that all of this requires a lot of coding and that coding all those extra planets would have eventually given us a worse game, with copypasta environments, copypasta planets, and bad unbalanced gameplay. Deja vu you say? NO! That is ME 1 in a nutshell. A great game with lots of grinding.

sorry for the rant but i am disapointed with this game and feel that bioware is really letting down fans of rpgs and more so mass effect fans.

RPG fans maybe but anyone who is a true ME 1 fan should be aware that the game is a SHOOTER with good RPG elements.

hopefully someone will read this high up and work to bring back me3 as an amazing rpg that it should and could be. if anyone agrees or disagrees post maybe im just seeing it wrong.

God no. I don't want grind in my game. ME should not and hopefully never will be a RPG.

I created a rule:

Visit the forum until the game is launched and then stay away because the "whiners" will show up complaining and bad mouthing the game the very much wanted to play before.

I'm applying the rule now. See you guys in a few days.

I just wanted to do this because this game is awesome....i am one of the biggest complainers in the world and while certain aspects of this game are different and yes i do feel that some things have been knowingly relaxed for a wider audience…so what …..the game still rocks the bells.

I regularly visit a sport game forum and all we do is cry over there as well ……..but do I need to remind people that this great IP is now under the diabolical EA umbrella and for the company to release a two disk game………when everybody in the world knows the cheap miser tactics that they employ.

I am so happy with ME2 only 10 hours in and the game is a blast…

PS I found the MAKO inME1a fun and tactical tool………Now I have to worry about my left finger falling asleep every time I want to scan a planet……Thanks guys lol

Oh my god. I really have no words for this thread, asides from. Stop Posting "Bioware Ruined Mass Effect". Bioware created Mass Effect you idiot. It may not be what YOU prefer, but a lot of others are having a great time playing, including myself. Sure, I preffered the combat RPG aspects and the ability to give my people and Shepard armor, but every other aspect of the game is better in pretty much every way. The worlds are all full and teeming with life, they feel real. The combat is a little annoying at times, like Shepard hugging the wrong wall and dying. The AI still isn't great for your team mates. Every single door in the game they get stuck behind and the auto teleport to you. This shows Bioware isn't very AI savvy if they made a system to make up for bad AI....

I feel the same way when I hear "George Lucas ruined Star Wars.."

Jex all changes they made were based on overwhelming b**ching done by this community with ME1 so don't blame them at all, blame the people right here on these forums who hated everything you like apparently.

Bioware ruined Mass Effect? Glad I'm playing Mass Effect 2 instead then. OK, I'll stop being a smartass now.

To be honest if they barely changed anything someone would complain they just retextured ME1 and made us buy it and then go on to ask why it wasn't released as DLC.

Yes, ME2 is different to ME1.

Yes, you may prefer playing ME1 to ME2.

No, this does not mean Mass Effect is ruined.

I like ME1 and I like ME2 (maybe more) if I didn't I wouldn't play.

People need to start thinking a little outside the box. I like when one version of a game is a bit different than the last, I would feel a little jipped if I just got a re-hash with better graphics and a different story, but the exact same game play.

I don't understand why people just can't enjoy both :-)

Ergh, just don't play it if you think bioware ruined it. Simples?

Although it's nice of you to take time out of your day to come on to the forums to create another thread which wasn't needed.

We all knew it was streamlined, you could always go back to ME1 if you want.

I love ME1... and I think ME2 improved on it in almost every way (aside from having to wear a helmet with any DLC armor).

*Better combat system
*More diversity in classes
*I don't have to spend 20 minutes converting 100 items into Omnigel every mission
*More diverse and colorful characters
*More customization with default armor
*No more barren planets to trek about
*Finally hired more architects to design buildings

I am somewhat disappointed with some of the "improvements" made in this game. I still think it is an awesome game to play but I think Bioware screwed up the character upgrade system. In ME1 I always played as a Vanguard and I could choose the assault rifle customization at the start of the game. I am limited to pistols and shotguns in ME2. The upgrade "tree" also only has 4 levels where in ME1 I think there were like 12 upgrade spots for things like shockwave and warp so it took longer to become proficient in them.  I also don't like having to wear a helmet with all the armor where I can't see my PC's face (nitpicky I know).
I do like the plot of the story so far. I think they did do a good job of continuing the story arc. I am still on Omega station so I will have to see how the rest of the story goes. All in all if they can fix the character upgrade "problems" in ME3 I will be happier.

A good game is a good game, regardless of genre. If Mass Effect 3 became a platforming adventure game, and it was a fantastic one, it would STILL be a good game.

"Streamlined" and "accessible" are not bad words, and trimming the fat of bloated and outdated game design and genre trappings to ensure a more enjoyable experience for most is not only commendable, it is practical.

Mass Effect 2 may not be what people expected, but that doesn't negate its enormous quality, well-done gameplay, fantastic story and characters, or the depth it does have.

Or, to paraphrase one of my favorite movies, "Mass Effect 2 isn't the game fans needed, but it's the game fans deserve."

I think that perhaps the problem is that it feels like they tried to improve upon the old system until it was a new system, rather than rethinking it and building a new system with familiar elements. I think that many were also hoping for a greater sense of continuity.

There are a lot of things that I like about the new system, but the overall feel is just a little off. The "problem" is that the game-play feels very technical, where the action and story are on the opposite end, with no real middle ground. In games, whether shooters or RPGs, the technical aspects of the system blend in to become part of the world -- an overall whole -- but this actually feels more like you are issuing a series of commands to make the action figure negotiate the path from A to B, rather than getting Shepard to the goal by whatever means possible. What makes it feel this way is the fact that the character movements, particularly in the cutscenes, are so beautifully natural, while the game-play is separate and technical; you're not trying to complete a particular mission (e.g., get to a person) as much as you are shooting targets to get to the next part of the dialog. In other words, there's little/no contextual continuity between dialog and game-play (this isn't a shooter vs RPG issue, as there are plenty of shooters that do this well, such as Half Life 2). It's like you had one director saying "lets make these people look really real," and another with his mind firmly entrenched in the technical aspects of the gameplay, and they never came together to think of a way to make the gameplay feel as natural as the cinematics look.

The only other "complaint" I have is that there is not much of a sense of continuity between the first and the second; for starters, ME2 is so dark that it blatantly contrasts with ME1; it would be like getting Gene Roddenberry to write and direct the third Matrix (although my example is in reverse order, I suppose). The familiar names and references to events seem a little cut and paste, and you actually get a sense that "this was imported from your ME1 savegame, so we have to acknowledge it," rather than giving an overall sense that you are still in the very same universe.

Understand that this really isn't a complaint, though. I'm quite happy with ME2, and I don't regret pre-ordering it for a second; I just think that if they had focused more on the look and feel, and developing the ME universe into a cohesive whole, that they could have avoided some of these complaints and made it even better overall :)

I have to agree with the OP.

There's too many changes in ME2 that I'm not liking, changes that I feel make the game too hard for me to enjoy. From controls, to limited weaponry use, to no abilities to change your equipment, to limited use of leveling squad powers.

The new health gauge sucks, the original one for the 360 made it easy for me to know where my health was at.

Also what happened to the combat sensor radar?

I'm also surprise how people are claiming all these things missing are now improvements. Hell Bioware should have just released a patch update for ME1 removing these features I mentioned and call it ME2.

Then I suggest you let the others do the thinking.

I'm thinking most people on this board who are "complaining" about Mass Effect 2 wanted to see the Mass Effect 1 issues improved, not removed.

Yes. That makes perfect sense.

agreed.  I love ME1 and even though I was content with some of the characters not returning in the sequel, I had no idea that ME2 would turn out to have such a dud playing style.

But what's even more disturbing is the people who are stating that everything we're pointing out missing from the game is an improvement.

It's darker for a reason, things have hit the fan. Citadel was almost destroyed, you died, Colonies are disappearing over night and without any warning. So ya it's going to be darker, the third is going to be the Darkest imho. As it should be, it's not happy fun times.
