In the Citadel, there's a nerdy Salarian running a computer/videogame stand, right by the bar. One of his quotes seems to be Bioware's response to the sort of complaints that have spawned these threads:

"I wish they still made RPGs like they used to. These days it's all about 'big choices' and 'visceral combat'. I remember the old days, where you had to remember to drink water and it took 5 hours real-time to fly somewhere!"

Mass Effect 2 is a ****ing fantastic game. Those that can't seem to wrap their heads around the new parts and just want to rage are really, REALLY missing out.

But... whatever.

It's darker for a reason, things have hit the fan. Citadel was almost destroyed, you died, Colonies are disappearing over night and without any warning. So ya it's going to be darker, the third is going to be the Darkest imho. As it should be, it's not happy fun times.

I understand and agree, but there was just too much contrast up front. Most of the population doesn't know about the collectors or what's going on, and I doubt that the Citadel taking heavy damage would profoundly affect everyone in the galaxy.

It also goes a bit beyond that by making nearly everyone you run into a ruthless merc or just generally nasty, back-biting people. There is also a very heavy push to make you go renegade, and I think that's the bigger part of it for me.

Like I say, it's not a problem that they went dark, just that it was so starkly contrasted that any continuity feels cut-and-pasted. What it really comes down to is that it added to the effect that I described in the rest of the post (the bit about being darker was a lead-in, not a separate point). If they had at least made some lighter pockets in the galaxy then it
would feel more like the galaxy had changed, rather than the production.
I felt like ME1 was a more cohesive game (blending gameplay with narrative) with varied environments, where ME2 seems more like a uniformly dark movie with a technically sophisticated arcade game between acts; the stark contrast of the darker atmosphere in ME2 only makes this more pronounced.

I'm having a hard time putting together an adequate description for what I'm trying to convey but, in my mind, these are all sides to a single issue that really revolves around "look and feel." To put it simply, it would seem that all of the efforts went into the technical and cinematic sides, without nearly as much going into the look and feel, both as a stand-alone game and as a sequel. This game just feels like they spent too much time on the details, and not enough on the whole.

I don't want anyone to misunderstand, though; I love ME2. This just makes it a 9, in my mind, whereas I would give it a 10 if it could have drawn things together better.

The bigger point of my post is that I think it's responsible for some of the criticism here. When it just doesn't feel right, and definitely feels different in almost every regard, it's easy to pick on the obvious changes like making it more of a shooter (although that surely plays a part).

I just finished ME2. It was ... It was irritating. There were so many glimpses of RPG brilliance (e.g., Tuchanka) and the combat is indeed more intensely visceral, but those aspects were but points of light lost upon a wine dark sea of poorly written (and acted) dialogue for (male) Shepard, more false dichotomies than even a politician could fabricate, and game mechanical staleness.

I knew from the beginning that there was going to be a problem when my ME1 endgame choice was not one of the presented options. For me, one of the great things about the first game was that the Paragon/Renegade system represented how people saw you, and that it was more a contrast between Idealism and Pragmatism than between Blind Martyrdom and Slavering Sociopathy. This more mature handling of ethics in an RPG made me go all tingly inside, and seeing it go the way of the dodo in the sequel truly made me sad.

Additionally, why is the Shepard in ME2 a congenital idiot? I lost count of all the times where I understood what was going on or remembered an NPC, but the dialogue options were all essentially, "Durrrr, I don't get it. Hurr."

Not only is he a moron, he's got real anger issues, too. It seemed like every dialogue option caused Shepard to make the Angry Face. After a while, it got so bad that I put on the blood dragon armor just to hide the Angry Face and Creepy Smile. *shudder*

Ruined it for me too . No spoilers, I don't really like the way they made the ME1 Love Interest storyline go. I consider the reasoning they gave behind them not being recruitable so they'd stay alive for ME3 essentially dishonest it appears, it is more likely they made things turn out the way they did for Ashley/Kaiden because they did not want to go to the trouble of having to program additional possibilities with them in ME3. Tremendous letdown.

This.

I think looking at the way Bioware have handled decisions and squad mates in ME2 their intentions are pretty clear for ME3.

Any surviving ME2 squad mates will be cameo'd. This is a given. They could ALL be dead and we've seen how Bioware treated the characters from ME1 who could die. Hudson has already mentioned they've been dreaming up new squadmates for ME3.

I doubt Bioware have any intention of returning Liara/Ashley/Kaidan to squad mate status. If I'm being honest I suspect they're planning on killing them off.

Added to that, cyborg Shepard with his/her synthetic parts ... where do you imagine they're going with that? I'd suggest it will be a case of Shepard becoming more and more like the enemy she's fighting, becoming increasing synthetic.

I disagree. ME2 is a great game. In no way is it "ruined".
I think it is important to note that many of the people who are not present on this forum are actually playing the game, and enjoying it thoroughly. They will probablty never visit these forums except for DLC reasons.
The first time I returned to this forum after playing through ME2 I was suprised by the amount of whining and complaining that was, and still is, occuring frequently. Yeah, constructive criticism is fine but developer bashing is disgusting.
And calling people on this social network Bioware "fanboys" (or "fangirls") is just plain silly. It's the equivalent of going to a Slayer concert and calling the crowd a bunch of blatant headbangers. Fans can still be realistic, objective and constructive.

EDIT: This post was aimed at the haters and such. Not the constructive criticisms that many have posted.
