Bethany had two good reasons to be in the group, especially in the Varric exaggerated story prologue.  However she also had these......

The weird thing is that the hands appear normal outside of cutscenes. It's like that cinematic turns them into scary mummy mitts.

I prefer Bethany to Carver by a mile. All day, every day. My Hawke likes being a protective older brother to his younger sister just like i would if i had a sister.

No I've always liked Carver more than Bethany, especially if you get to friendship with Carver. It's just so much more rewarding in my opinion

That's why she isn't a mary sue,and as for flaws it depends on how you se he,there are some who don't like her for her personality that is still a variable, since Bhtany of the cirlce,is different than GW bethany, and in the Dlc with Corypheus shi is awesome like Carver.

People disliking her for not having a personality flaw is not in itself a personality flaw. Or even evident of having a personality. Perhaps Mary Sue is the wrong term for her. She's more of a drip or a wet blanket.

I can't remember any memorable dialogue from her. It's all about being worried about the templars. Carver is a brat but at least he has a personality.

I personally prefer the Carver/Hawke dynamic.  It feels so much more like the relationship I have with my younger sister.

However, one of my playthroughs is as a surprisingly protective playboy rogue!Hawke who (in banter) told off Isabela when she suggested he buy his younger sister a night at the Blooming Rose.  Bethany also has some good comeback lines in banter and dialogue:

Aveline: You show admirable restraint, Bethany.
Bethany: For a mage, you mean.
Aveline: I could also say, "for a Hawke," but yes, for a mage.
Bethany: You have a sword. Why aren't you killing someone right now?
Aveline: Fair point, but I can put my sword down.
Bethany: Believe me, I have tried.

Fenris: You've been an apostate your whole life, then?
Bethany: Like my father before me. What of it?
Fenris: Didn't your family consider that dangerous?
Bethany: There are mages who go their whole lives without ever falling prey to a demon. Many of them, in fact.
Fenris: And if the Templars came looking for you? That would not be danger enough?
Bethany: Perhaps there shouldn't be any Templars.

She may not be quite as snarky as Carver, but she's got some spirit.

I love Bethany, but I love to hate Carver (if that makes any sense. XD) And I'm probably in the minority here, but I actually prefer Carver as a Templar rather as a Grey Warden; probably because I don't have the DLCs and most of the character growth that players witness happens there. As it is, it makes more sense to me for Carver to be a Templar story-wise. Two siblings on opposite sides, not necessarily seeing eye to eye - lots of tension which I enjoy. Moreover, it feels more plausible to be kidnapped by Grace and that other guy (I really can't remember his name now) as a Templar - access to the Gallows and everything.

Gameplay wise, as a Templar, he gets to fight against Meredith without taking up a companion slot which I'd rather save for Fenris.

I liked Bethany more, though my canon Hawke was a mage so I usually ended up with Carver.

I have a save of a mage Hawke... somewhere... but normally I'm a rogue so I see the most of Bethany. I'm also quite a Warden fan, and when I learned Hawke's sibling could be made a Warden (well after my first playthrough) I immediately restarted and did just that. Carver seems to really like that path, but Bethany... not so much. Maybe the people complaining that Bethany is always too nice or agreeable could make her a Warden. I'm not suggesting this option is news to anyone now, but it scored several points with me:

-a living sibling who's not a contrarian ass, which just seems nice given the rest of Kirkwall

-Warden

-a beat change regarding Bethany's personality

-more dialogue with Nathaniel around

-the ability for my rogue to lead an all mage party against Meredith in the end

Edit: but I love Carver's banter with the companions!

Carver is generally a stupid ******, immature and annoyed about living in his sibling's shadow. But since I tend to play mage, I end up with Carver and generally call him on his BS every opportunity, which makes him hate me. I wish there would have been a way to help him actually move out of my shadow, and mature a little.

Make him a GW will do that.

I too much prefer Carver than Bethany. I find her boring, and I love his plot line. I can really feel his frustration at everything that's going on, and I think they did an excellent job with his character development, though I much prefer him as a Templar than a grey warden, simply because interactions with him throughout the game are meaningful.

I like both characters, and I think it sucks that you can't have both, but I very much preferred Carver over Bethany. Carver has a much more interesting relationship and conversations with Hawke than Bethany does. Also, Bethany was kind of a Mary Sue character, which (sadly) reminded me of Tallis.

No, you are far from the only person here that goes Carver > Bethany.

I prefer Bethany over Carver because I can't bring myself to care about Carver's inferiority complex in the manner it's presented. Even turning him into a Grey Warden requires me to care enough about him to do that when I simply can't anymore, so he always dies in the deep roads whenever I have a Mage Hawke. I don't even "love to hate" Carver, because gives me a headache instead of making me invested in keeping him around to see his story progess.

And Bethany being a Mary Sue...why? There's nothing unbelievable about her(unless you just plain don't like how unconfrontational she is) and she certainly doesn't have any wish fulfillment elements. How can you even justify comparing her the Talis, the reigning queen of having an actual reason to be called a Mary Sue?(honestly, I don't care to use the Sue label anymore, but Talis really doesn't feel like she has a bigger reason to be called one that Bethany of all people)

When it comes to who I'd rather use in the party, I'd take another mage over another warrior that isn't named Aveline.
