Just for yucks, I installed the demo on an upgraded Dell C521. Dual-core Athlon, 6670 vidcard, 3 GB RAM. Way below min specs, of course. Load times were awful, but the game's actually playable on low settings, which surprised me.

I was wondering if anyone finished the game on something this bad.

Obviously. Lot of people played on consoles. ;)

Heh. Yeah, obviously that PC's superior to a 360, so I guess I shouldn't really be surprised that this worked.

Alienware.

Game Crashes, freezing, excessive load times. And it was not just DAI it was other games too. I finally had enough and build my own machine. Now my games run as smooth as a nug's bottom. :D

I've played it inside a virtual machine on a laptop. Runs terribly, but I'm impressed it even managed to get past the start screen.

Have an Alienware and never had any problems, game runs perfectly :P

My brother though, he ran the game on a veery old pc, I don't even know the specs but it's at least 5 years old, he had to play with everything on low and every loading took like 10 minutes.. plus the pc would sometimes just shut down cause too overheated (even though he had a fan placed just right next to it to cool it) and wouldn't turn back on without waiting a while.

I honestly don't know how he managed to finish the game. Must have been stressing..

I had a PC like that for a little while. I had the side of the case off and a fan blowing directly into it. It made WoW raid nights very stressful, constantly worrying if it was going to last the session or die in the middle of a pull. It lasted about six weeks like that before it finally died and I had to get a new rig.

My husband's computer (Alienware) has had nothing but problems since he bought it. The video drivers crash hard every time he tries to run a DVD. For a while, it would overheat constantly, but it turned out that whoever assembled it at the plant left the plastic cover on the processor before attaching the heat sink. That's right. There was a layer of plastic between the processor and the heat sink. It was melted in place. Now that we've got that problem fixed, it no longer overheats every 5 minutes, but we haven't attempted to run DAI on it. The machine has enough problems.

I've got a home-built system that runs the game fine on the highest settings. Every once in a while, I'll get an inexplicable DX crash, but it seems to be a random thing. I'll go for weeks without a single one and then I'll get three in a row.

I had to fight Dellware for a refund on my Alienware 18 at the beginning of this year. I have to say DAI killed my machine in  a matter of 5 minutes due to overheating. Said overheating could never be resolved. I've since gotten a Asus and couldn't be happier.

So I second the Alienware hell that came with trying to play this game.

Alienware used to make excellent computers. But that was before Dell bought them, and that happened 8 years ago.

People remember how great Alienware was in 2004. That time is gone, unfortunately.

PC gamers really should be building their own machines. They're cheaper, a d typically have higher quality components.

True to that.

Every pre-built gaming computer I looked at just did not have what I was seeking. I wanted a high end gaming computer but within my budget. Thus I built one. Now if I were to buy what I bought it would have cost me ten times as much. I should have built one years ago.

I had the same experience. I built my first last year (for Inquisition).

Well I bought a new computer before DAI came out but in preparation for it. It's specs were 16GB RAM, i5 4670k CPU, and a GTX 760. I thought a GTX 760 would be more than enough, boy was I wrong. I can't play games on any setting lower than Ultra and having to play on Medium-High settings just killed the experience for me. I think I got to Skyhold before I realized I couldn't continue like this.

I've been waiting for this game since I finished DA2 and not playing it perfectly was a major turn off, so I replaced the GPU with a GTX 970. I finished the game with this card and it was an okay experience, I remember always going into the graphics menu since I still got stutters and wondered what to turn down. The 970 was almost perfect, it could run it on Ultra but with no MSAA. I can't play without AA so on one of my other playthroughs when I got to the Templar quest it kept lagging in that area. Even with MSAA off, I felt like I had an epiphany at that moment. I needed to buy another 970 to SLI for the first time and that's what I did.

The game is now perfect, everything on Ultra, with 4xMSAA. I have never looked back now. I finally have my dream computer and it is the best feeling ever! :)

Yeah, on low settings DA:I looks like crap. Lucky for me, I play so many oldies that having a game look like crap isn't a dealbreaker for me. The truly strange thing is that I didn't see any stuttering . Framerates were low -- 13-15 in towns, 20-22 in other areas -- but they were consistently low.

I should point out that the rig I mentioned in the OP won't actually run the full game out of the box. The DRM requires additional processor threads which a dual-core without HT just doesn't have. I've heard that there's a workaround, but I haven't personally tried it.

As did I, in a round-a-bout kind of way.  Started with a pre-assembled box including a AMD FX-4100 processor which was...OK....but now, the only part left of the pre-assembled rig is the case and the original case fan.  New motherboard, i7 4790K, GTX980, new PSU, RAM and extra cooling fans.  Much better experience all around.

Discovered something funny today. In a sense, that rig in the first post actually runs DA:I better than DA:O. DAI has low-res visuals and low framerate, but at least the gameplay functions properly. If there are more than 12 or so active enemies in DA:O, the lousy threading means that events stop happening even while the game keeps chugging along. For instance, a character will play the animation for using a health poultice, but won't actually use the poultice.

This goes in the opposite direction from the OP, but two years ago I thought about building my own rig for DAI.  I've built several over the years,  but decided that I didn't want to spend the time, and I wanted to have an end-to-end warranty.

Spent six months spec'ing out various configurations on a couple of custom builder sites.

Went with a Digital Storm Slade.

Final Build:

i7-4770

16GB @ 2133MHz

GTX-770

1TB SSD

Other fancy stuff and 4-year hardware warranty

Cost (delivered):

US$2000

Couldn't be happier.

Pricing the identical components using Newegg it seems I paid about a 20% premium.

Totally worth it to have someone else do the work and stand behind it!   B)

(If you want to drool, check their Aventum 3 )

Diving in to mention that I can run the game tolerably (for me) on my 3 year old Acer Aspire laptop with Intel Core i3 and HD Graphics 4000. The graphics settings (save meshes, resolution, and character textures) are bottomed out, I have to force it into 800x600, it runs slow and framerate's locked at 16, but it actually looks and runs better than my PS3 version did. Go figure.

Some people like me don't have the know how to build there own computer.  I got mine from Ironside computer. I didn't get the strongest graphics card available r9 270X  and 8 gb with an i5.  But the box is nice and I think it's upgradable.
