My imported save file comes from a PT where the Warden survived through the DR, so it seems weird to hear Merril call him "the lost Warden" or say "nobody is more pained by Mahariel's loss than I".
Is this a mistake by the devs or did I misunderstand something?

Some of that is used for all Wardens.. Even without death, the Warden is missing. You'll see Leliana confirm this again in the end.

It can be interpreted that once you become a Warden, you will need to abandon your old life to focus on the darkspawn. It's like killing you were before. If you to talk to Leandra in the beginning of act 2, she talks as if Bethany/Carver is dead if they become a Warden.

No one says the Warden is dead though (if they're not). They're just missing. There are still differences.. Merrill will eventually find out if they died and talk about it.
