Trying to finish the 1 mil xp challenge for my mage before I finish up the monthly chest and get more drakescale instead of something useful. So I'm wondering what's the most effective way to farm this experience? Its been hit or miss with pugs, on perilous some games have everyone nearly maxing xp others have barely any in a full match. Is it more effective to run fast solo threatening runs, or a little slower perilous/nightmare with a team?

I know I saw something about an xp cap but also that pugs almost never hit it. I know someone here has done the math, there seems to be an equation for every question I've had to this point, but most everyone else is figuring gold rates not experience.

Cap for NM is about 100-150K
Idk what it is for Perilous and below.
You need 195.4K exp to promote a character (lvl 1-20) get a good strong team. Play exp generating classes (Alchy, AW, Saarebas, Lego, Ele, etc) and make sure everyone hits as many enemies as they can, lots of barrier, make sure you get hit when you have barrier to generate support exp. Not really any math, just play smart.

Warriors xp:

Silent sister

War horn, War Cry, Throwing Blades, Spinning Blades

--Maximizes support exp with both area taunt and panic

Mage xp:

Virtuoso:

Fire Pact Belt, Hot Licks Ring, Power Chord Ring

Hot licks everything not fire resistent, Power Chord everything else

Rogue xp:

Alchemist.

Freeze, Fire Flask, Ele Mines, Knockout Bomb

Spam support exp everywhere, spam mine combo everywhere else.

Perilous is the easy sweet spot for pugs in most cases. NM is better xp, but requires better players, so It isn't recommended unless you can solo AND quickly. I can, but I'm the exception. If you can solo quickly under private/pug game situations, do so. Otherwise YMMV.

Ideally it is HB for xp farming but few players can do that.

Havnt done HB yet, can run NM pretty well with pugs, just not with mage (the last class I need). I've been running Perilous with AW most of the night mainly because I can make up for a bad pug and pull us if needed it just seems to be taking forever. The perilous seems to be fairly good xp 50% of the time, the rest it ends up with the top one or two people getting about 4 times as much xp as everyone else in a run.

I guess I can pick up with some friends tomorrow to better maximize gains. I was thinking I'd get more xp from doing a very fast threatening solo if I had to, but taking on others if available, but to this point the xp difference seems to great to be made up by saving 4 or 5 minutes on the run.

Thanks for the answers.

I tried to do quite a few HB games on old maps and I don't think I'm getting any more xp than NM.

Also soloed a HB with Lego yesterday and turns out I only get half a level worth of xp :( Now that's really unfair...

Honestly spamming threatening I think would be quick enough, and almost zero chance of failure. Perilous could be if you have geared and skilled friends. Perilous can feel like routine with the right group.

Nightmare and HB would take to long IMO. And the occasional failure would really cut into the xp/time ratio.

I might be wrong though. When I first started playing unlocking all the characters and getting drakescale was the first thing I did. I didn't have a clue what I was doing really, and just did threatening/routine. I finished all three over a weekend

I don't know why anyone would say that.  I got all 3 chests in about 2 weekends in threatening PUGs.   Threatening has the best PUGs because I have not seen any failed yet.  10 to 12 minutes matches and repeat and you can always find a group within minutes.   Perilous PUGs fails a lot and take a lot longer.   I don't know about NM PUG or if they even exist.  The only 2 NM games I was in was joining friend list groups.

The best way to farm xp is find a map, and play it. Learn the spawn points, the best chokepoints and spots to block LOS, and where the doors and pots are likely to be found.

For me, it was the Honky Chateau, not so coincidentally the only map I've completed the gold challenge for.

As far as difficulty goes, play what yer comfy with, or what yer gear and promotes qualify you for. Eventually you'll be ready for the next step up.

I tried this Virtuoso build, and it runs through threatening but I'm having trouble on perilous staying alive. The inferno pact belt drops my HP to 150ish and if anything with a ranged attack decides to target me I'm down in one shot. I'm using a kingfisher staff to build hp with kills and I can kill most enemies in 1 or 2 blasts of hot licks with the HL ring but it doesn't really matter since most anything kills me in 1 hit like I said.

Is there anything I can do to use the belt and increase survivability? I like the dps output and it really let's me control much of the field, it's really just those ranged qunari or green demons that give me pause. I guess if we could just select enemy faction this would be my new favorite build honestly, but it sucks knowing as soon as the match starts I'm going to get faded.

A little knight music, Rock Armor Tonic, and resist tonics help, and heal on kill / encore too, but ultimately it is a glass cannon. You're dependent on kills and heal on kill.

On the left tree, on the lower left side there's other defensive passives as well. Ultimately it is a glass cannon, and you need allies to prevent you from being stagger-locked to death if you cannot burn it down immediately.

Qunari --> Power Chord

When speed matters, the virtuoso can burst down everything faster than anything else mage-wise, even sara.

If you can get a friend to play a mana surge keeper, you can potentially have infinite mana too. Sure reavers can do 5k damage with comparable equipment up to 10k+ per swing at melee distance. Virtuoso can do this at any range AND do AoE on top of that. He's just a lot glassier. The lag between moving and swinging to target (especially on reavers without combat roll) is such that the Virtuoso will kill before the Reaver finishes swinging.

The trade off is Virtuoso is glass cannon. Kill the enemy before it reaches you, or be killed. Vs ranged, you have Knight Armor / Barrier / There is no darkness / the resist tonics + song . . . but also cover.

use virt with despair staff and pi and he's decent against most things on peri, the problem is the lack of hok on the staff, swapped to the hackon staff and he has the hok but the loss in def is making him die way to much, and that's with a health belt, I tried to use the pact belt once but he has less than 200 hp with it and i'm not even sure things hit actually him rather than just looked sternly in his direction before he dies >,<

otoh I have used him successfully with nothing more than powercord to solo fc although stage 4 against ds is problematic due to the earthshakers not taking enough damage / just need a lot more promotes to make it work well /

I think you may be right nano, you don't really even need to be hit to die, lock on is usually enough. The belt is just so fun though, you just gotta play on the edge of death.

Still teaching new players to take advantage of glitches; some things won't change I guess  ;)

Nevertheless, that is a very comprehensible Virtuoso build, despite all the risks. If the OP has a decent Perilous team, it is definitely worth investing in it.

Avoid Fereldan Castle. It takes like 50% longer to complete, but you get like 20% more exp. The only reason to go to FC is to kill frost dragons.

And farm Large Creature kills.
Depending on how you are at the game, you get more exp at a barely noticeable increase in game time. IMO it is worth it, I did usually switch to old maps for variety though.

I did most of the faction challenges on FC soloing in  private games.   I think I got the 300 kills 2 or 3 zones in.   That way I could cherry pick the faction and get all the kills and won't ****** off anyone. :P

Yeah I finished it off on Monday night, ended up running threatening with virtuoso and basically soloing it while the low levels grabbed gold. That build is so good on lower difficulties. I had to cancel out of a few runs so I didn't complete the monthly too soon, but once I finished I got the hakkon bow I've been looking for to finish my hakkon weapons, just need the shield now, and I got an elemental sword I forget it's name another level 27 purple but I completely forget. So it was definitely worth the grind for drakescale before completing
