At first, I thought I'd turn it off after my achievement playthrough, but it's growing on me.

I tend to check in with companions a lot, and companion quests have great rewards. Without the trial, I maxed out companions' approval quickly, then got a rapid-fire sequence of all their friendship dialogue. I never had to think about what the inquisitor said, because I could patch it over by finding artifacts or killing specific groups of enemies.

The double disapproval protects me from myself, spacing out the friendship dialogue even if I blitz their approval quests. I even have enemies now, which is new. I also have enemies that are slowly evolving into friends, and that feels extra rewarding.

I'm afraid of this trial because I don't like it when someone doesn't like me.  :(   But you do make it sound interesting so I may give it a try on my next game.  B)

Man, I had to reload a save and lost some time because I was going for the achievement.  I've never, ever had Cole meet me at the bridge to Skyhold, tell me to ****** off, and leave before.  Ever.   That was hard keeping him there.  Protip to anyone going for the achievement with this.  Just to make things easier with Cole, do In Hushed Whispers and ally with the mages, I guess.  Allying with the Templars sets Cole up primed to leave.  The only way I was able to keep him was -immediately- upon getting to Skyhold, leaving and doing some things I knew would gain approval from him before going back to Skyhold for the first time.

It is interesting, partly because the existing approval system is way too forgiving.

Though the disapproval scenes seem to be written on the assumption that the Inquisitor has been pretty antagonistic to the companion, so if you've been polite and friendly having the companion get all hostile can make them seem like jerks.

Cole and Dorian are the biggest risks for this cheevo, so the safe bet is to ally with the mages. It gives Sera great disapproval, but that can be countered with other approval gains beforehand.

You can keep Cole if you saved the Crossroads before you choose your allies. He will approve of you helping even though he hasn't joined yet.

The benefit of this trail is that you can easily see all the low approval cut scene and punch Solas on his face.

But Cole will leave, you can't avoid that. And Blackwall.

You can hold off recruiting Sera Sera and Viv (both of whom give the largest disapproval and are the most difficult to regain approval for) until after completing In Hushed Whispers.  Dorian and Cole are the only two with a hidden approval gain/loss so doing stuff that annoys them before recruiting  them wont negativity affect their approval.

Bull's In Hushed Whispers disapproval can be made up by holding off the horse racing until after you complete it (he gets one Approves for each race) and Cass' by doing her kill these people quest (one greatly approves, one approves as long as she's in the party).

Vivienne won't leave you once joined.

Blackwall, Sera, Cole and Dorian do

But holding off her recuitment can negate some of the disapproval.  If you want any hope of getting her to max friendship with this trial while recuiting the mages then she needs to be recuited after doing that quest.

This is what I did, do everything I could without recruiting companions until just before IYHSB and since I was getting the Tread Lightly achievement too, I didn't have to worry about Cole.

Getting mage allies is the easiest way to get this trial.
