Slow Load Times With Core 2 Duo?

I've been playing the ME2 and noticed that loading can take up to a minute or two on my computer. I'm not sure what the core of this issue is.

However, this problem has happened before with a different game, The Last Remnant, and what I found through searching the web is that the game has to be set to run with CPU affinity towards one core, instead of both.

So I tried the same fix I found for it and used it with ME2; I have noticed significant speed ups, I used the command prompt to go to the Binaries directory and used start:

start /affinity 01 MassEffect2.exe

Loading inside of the Normandy, especially from Deck 1 to Deck 2, has increased from minutes to several seconds. Ie: Loading to Deck 1 will take 30-40 seconds normally, but with this it is litterally instananeous, one or two seconds. Going back to Deck 2 would take about a minute or so, but with this only 4-5 seconds.

Will there be a patch for this in the future? I'm using a C2D E8400 @ 3GHz.

Going through the same thing. I'll do just that when I'll have time.

Should I keep the affinity to one core even during fights? Or really just switch it off for the load screen?

Can you explain what you mean by using "start"?

open a notepad, copy/paste

start /affinity 01 MassEffect2.exe

then save the file as a .bat and open it. Make sure to save it in the same directory the exe is in.

Thanks. Appears that it doesn't work with the Steam version of the game though - Steam intercepts the launching of the .exe and ends up negating the Affinity parameter. The alt tab + task manager method works though.

I tested this out and my load times were hugely improved - however I also noticed a crash to desktop when switching my weapons loadout - might be related.

Maybe try this program, the task manager way can get a bit tedious

Not sure if it'll work with steam versions, but you can try it.

I tested more and it definitely crashes to desktop ONLY with one CPU affinity. With the default 2 cores being used, it doesn't crash.

I would say this "fix" is a "use at your own peril" type of thing. I really hope Bioware can get a proper fix out for this.

You don't have to leave it one one core. Uncheck Core 2, press OK, then re-enable it, press OK again, and you're set.
