I almost always have Cass and Solas with me. They're my favourite characters both story-wise and in terms of gameplay. Cassandra is a guard-generating monster and the one person in the Inquisition I trust most. Solas has great crowd control with his Rift Mage abilities and I usually max out his Spirit tree for best Barriers/Dispel/Revive, and he often has really interesting comments while exploring. Plus, boyfriend.

3rd party member is usually either

- Varric, because he's a pal

- Cole, for fascinating commentary and dialogue with Solas

I do also reserve third spot for certain companions based on specific situations:

- Blackwall, for tough plot-relevant battles (like Haven and Adamant) and storming forts

- Iron Bull, for every dragon fight, because I don't need a depressed Bull

- Dorian, pretty much just for banter with everyone

Cassandra, Iron Bull and Varric.

Depending on the situation I will swap Iron Bull for Dorian, Cole or Blackwall. I will however use Blackwall, Iron Bull and Varric for the Mire.

I only use Sera for her quest and in Forbidden Oasis instead of Varric, cause Varric's line, "We are done here, right?" Gets on my nerves.

I never use Vivienne. She can sit up in her attic and rot for all I care.

Sera, Cass and Dorian are almost always at Inky's side. Personal quests are one of the only time someone else goes for the most part or when farming approval. Sera never leaves Inky's side though, never ever. Viv (personality conflict), Varric (bored to death with) and Cole (honey tongue, need I say more) never leave Skyhold.

This was a difficult question for me but so far I have really loved my Female Fatale Team with my IQ Sheva Trevelyan. All the gals have good relationships with one another minus the minor clashes every once in awhile.
Spoiler

And the adventure isn't over. Still have Hakkon, Descent, and Trespasser to complete!

When hearing about the companions before the game was released, I was pretty excited for all of the warriors. Once I started playing my Inquisitor, I found out that they were everything I was hoping for, and they became permanent additions. Admittedly, my favorite companion is Vivienne, but she fits right in as a powerful Knight Enchanter (I even put her in fancy Orlesian warrior armor).

My Templar-tank shield warrior romanced the humorous and layered Iron Bull after the angst-ridden Blackwall pushed her away, and I took Cassandra out for all the main quests and her personal quests. After Vivienne becomes Divine, Cassandra gains a permanent DLC-trekking spot on the team.

I love dwarves though, so I squeezed Varric in as well. Blackwall was executed, so my witty Inquisitor had a good time with Varric joining the team. I kind of feel sorry for Varric. I used him a lot in Dragon Age 2, but my aggressive Hawke actually rivaled the poor dwarf, so I feel like my Inquisitor is actually a better match.

I like to take

Cassandra - She's fun, hits hard, and keeps us grounded

Varric - Because he's always fun

Solas - He's usually very insightful.

After the game ends, Vivienne usually comes with me.

For some reason, Solas seems to use barrier more effectively than any other mage, despite picking the same spells, and setting their tactics alike. So, he's usually with me. Cassandra and Blackwall together are almost unstoppable as tanks, so when I'm playing a rogue, they're usually with me as well.

I take the Bull to fight dragons just because it makes him happy.

If I need a rogue, I take Sera once I have her build going because she's just awesome with a good bow.

Although I like Varric, I seldom take him anywhere.

Solas is like a freakin' guardian angel to my Inquisitor. He always protects her either with Barrier attacks an enemy coming at her, and he's not set to defend her at all! He even revives her the moment she dies. Playing the DLC's after he leaves was not the same. Dorian is a close second though and by Descent he was quick to catch on and any enemy that does touch me ends up with Cole's daggers shoved roughly in their back! Again I don't have him set to defend either.

Dorian never leaves my side. He's not just eyecandy; his banter is top notch and I can listen to him talk about Tevinter all day. Other characters I usually roll with are Cassandra and Sera.

Cassandra and Dorian, they are useful backup plans when you run out of healing potions

Cassandra, Solas and Cole, almost always. For my new playthrough I'm going to try to mix it up a little more to hear all the banter, though I'll miss my favourites.

My default party always includes Dorian.  I switch out Sera and Varric.  And Cass and Bull.  I never take Solas, Viv, Cole or Blackwall anywhere.  Well, I throw them a bone every once in awhile just so they don't grow cobwebs.  My nightmare run was basically Cass, Dorian and Sera along with my magequisitor.

Cassandra, I swear her and Blackwall very rarely die because of how strong and defensive they are. I always bring her for the tougher quests, especially on the higher difficulties.

I DO THAT and it's not even that bad cause just give them all barrier and you're set to go.

I usually have Dorian, Cole, Cassandra and than have the Inquisitor as a support mage. Although, the only ones I don't ever use are Iron Bull (he dies too quickly and I need a meat shield) and Sera (who I don't want anywhere near my inquisition).

You should think about giving Bull sword and shield. Makes him live longer.

Did they ever sort out Blessed Blades? I like bringing either her or Blackwall around because, as you say, they're unkillable, but it annoyed me that Blessed Blades wasn't doing anything. I wouldn't be surprised if it were fixed by now, but I don't recall reading that it was. Mind you, I would still bring one of them with me even without that one particular ability. I'm just curious. Which of the two I select, Cassandra or Blackwall, depends mostly on who's in the party at the moment and how much banter is left. If I've heard most of Cassandra's banter for a given segment of the game, I'll take Blackwall instead, and vice versa.

Cole + somebody no#1 + somebody no#2

.. I take Cole anywhere because of that extra insight. And since now I'm trying to trigger Dori-Bull romance so it's dorian-bull-cole.

But for my 'ready for everything' squad, I usually take Blackwall + Cole + Cassandra/Varric/Sera (since I play rift mage)
