I am not trying to be gross here, but I have a question that has lingered on my mind for sometime.

Do female mages have a higher chance of being blood mages then males, because of <clears throat> "Aunt Flo?"

During these ...uh seven days...do females become more powerful? Maybe more dangerous?

I am being dead serious here.

The scary part is, this isn't the first time a thread like this has been made.

The answer is no. Mages have an equal chance of becoming blood mages regardless of gender because being a blood mage is a choice.

it wouldn't be super efficient blood magic either if you'd use menstrual blood for it xD 1 cup of blood max once a month isn't that much (some as little as 3 to 4 tablespoons ...)

And considering what you're talking about is contaminated with other tissue...

I'd think that might be a problem.

We don't know if that would even work - menses has blood in it, but it's not the same as the blood you get from cutting your wrist open. It seems that what powers blood magic isn't so much the physical blood as the 'life force' you get from shedding it, so I'm not sure you'd get much from a waste product. It's not like there are a bunch of urine mages in Thedas. (At least, I hope not.)

It's not just the spilling of blood that powers the magic; it's the act of sacrifice. The more violent the pain or death used to power the blood magic, the more powerful the resulting spell. Otherwise, you could just carry around a jar of blood and up-end it when you need to cast a spell.

I don't know how bad cramps hurt, but I would guess slitting your wrists stings a bit more.

I have seen stories with the spilling of blood, but that blood can then be contained and kept. So the act of shedding could power it, so it could be possible... Not saying likely, mind you. But possible.

I did get some of my wording from WoT Vol. 1. Blood magic in Dragon Age does require a violent act.

Okay, I don't have WoT so I didn't know. That basically cinches it then.

My Female Amell would never become a blood Mage. She's a hard core Aquartian, to be honest. But my Female/Male Mage Hawkemay think your on to something.

All true.

This is why all senior enchanters should be proud libertarian members such as myself. We can't have women mucking about in high positions of the circle, they're liable to become blood mages or abominations once a month! Beard or you can't be heard! Beard or you can't be heard!

Wait, who are Orsino and Uldred?

Could a girl's first period if she's a mage make her paranoid, though? I don't know how much sex ed Thedas or the Circles have. I imagine the Circles aren't too big on it simply because mage-born children are taken away so quickly. Are they rare, though? Abstinence-only education is doomed to fail, but when has that ever stopped certain types of people from trying?

But seriously. If most Circles are remotely similar to Kinloch Hold, there are going to be priests and other people reciting the Chant of Light all the time, and probably emphasizing the parts against blood magic. Templars are everywhere. I'm not sure I'd be willing to ask people what's going on with my body if that's how I'd been raised. So regardless of whether it would be an effective source for blood magic, just thinking "Maker forgive me! I became a blood mage on accident!" has got to lend itself at least somewhat to an easier possession.

Assuming it would work isn't the only real difference how the blood is accessed? A regular nosebleed might let a mage occasionally cast a spell without slitting their wrists but I'm not sure it's much of an advantage.

On the other hand it is magic.

Well now that you've said it...

...actually I think the WoT vol1 mentions that blood magic is more powerful if a more violent act is committed in making the sacrifice.

Huh that would be right out of ancient greek world charges and legends about witchcraft there but I honestly both don't know and never thought about it. Blood magic becomes more powerful with suffering and violence though.

Violent acts are more likely to happen when "Aunt Flo" as OP put it, comes to visit.

So the answer is yes ;)

your body is sacrificing (or punishing you, to me it's always a punishment) your endometrial lining, causing pain and bleeding. It's basically your body performing a blood ritual.

And the cramps, oh the cramps ... if it would just be the cramps, it's often nausea, vomiting, migraines, lack of appetite and/or feeling ravenous .. it's so bad .. right now I kinda wish I could do some blood magic during that time of the month ... it would make up for all the BS a little
