I was doing an op by myself as the virtuoso and died because I couldn't do any damage to a group of these guys who kept just slapping all my attacks away. Is there some kind of trick to make them lower their guard or something? Or do I just need to be in a group to take on qunari O.o

Positioning your character as close to them as possible, pretty much on top of them, let's you ignore the Jedi blocks.

Tag the guy next to them with Cool Beats+

Wait until they're about to attack you & then strike with any attack

Get behind them & use Power Chord

That's the only way I've been able to beat them with ZITHER!

Hope that helps in some small way

Here we go, Power Chord, the very best there is, when you absolutely, positively got to kill every Spearchucker in the room, accept no substitutes.

the entire faction has stupid block mechanics, even the scabby ass can block by just crossing her arms, in fact the only unit that doesn't block you is the shock trooper but he can halve your damage by holding his hammer in the right way......

the only way to kill any of them is when there doing an animation other than block, even running behind a defender and attacking can be blocked if he's aware of you .....

really your options are don't play solo or play a different char  since we still don't have faction selector despite a year of people asking for one /

Yea the issue I ran into was that it was a group of 3-4 of them with no other enemy types around. So I couldn't hit anyone else with an AoE effect to damage them, no matter who I targeted they just smacked my attacks away. You'd think the qunari would have conquered Thedas long ago if their troops can just deflect magic bolts with their bare hands :P

Confusion grenade and have them fight for you.  Or just power chord them while literally on them.

I find it particularity offensive when they block my (perfectly valid) 27 arrows from one bow shot as I do a (perfectly valid) back flip and then shoot them with an arrow that (perfectly validly) explodes for 5,000 points of damage.  It's galling what they get away with, with their over powered abilities.

You are not supposed to solo at all in this game.

You are not supposed to farm challenges with zither on routine difficulty while spamming Power Chord.

Get within <3m

Within <3 meters? You mean make them fall in love with you then kill them when they sleep peacefully in the same bed as you.
They trusted you, you stabbed them in the back!...I like it ;)

Ele: Immolate them, WG is good too

AW, Keeper: CL, they can't block stuff from above

Necro: can scare them with Horror (afaik they don't block when scared), or use WG

Zither: Power Chord, but stand close

Saarebas: Athlok-Detonation (all three stances affect them)

Archers: Explosive Shot

Luka: Mines because BOOM! >D

Izzy: Flashing Steel

Assassin: Stealth and attack from behind (Twin Fangs)

Pala: Throwing Blades followed by Hidden Blades

Katari, Reaver, Avvar: Stand close and hit them

Lego & Templar: have not tried yet to fight the Spear Guys with them, but I'd say the WoH & SP should affect them

Edit: totally forgot the best thing

Ele: Put a Fire Mine below them, see them fly

AW: Chain lightning, Fade Cloak, spirit blade. I think stone fist also work.
Archer/Hunter: explosive shot and spike trap.
Elementalist: immolate.

Don't play other ranged. Actually, AW and Archer most of times.

As Virtuoso, upgrade PC and guarantee dispel. The buff that enables them to dodge disappears.

What Drasca said.

Plus, every class has a way of dealing with most things, but you may have to play outside yer comfort zone; change up yer build, or yer gear.

Figger out what yer weak against, and compensate best you can.

Edit/add; the first thing I do with Zither! is grab upgraded PC. Compensates for a lotta weaknesses.

WG's terrible for Spearmen. So's Sara's Freeze/Shatter. Cold Resistent / Immune. FM remains amazing. AB Fire too. Use non-cold abilities vs spear.

I used the upgraded version and they were still blocking, and I was at point blank practically stood inside them ...... I'm a guess its just one of those connection related bugs you get from time to time, I gave up trying to zither with storm pact belt hakons wisdom  staff hot licks ring and powercord ring after that round lol, but probably only having 75 melee promotes that combo isn't so good anyway, much more survivable swapping the hot licks ring with hok ring and the despair staff,

as a side note when the wisdom staff I found it rarely generates hok unless you have a hok ring equipped is that a too many attributes on the weapon thing ?

I don't know, I went Qunari farming today with my Saarebas and Athlok-Detonation worked great on the Spearmen.

Spoiler

On Perilous and below, abilities that freeze them are useful and can do decent damage, but once you get up to Nightmare they take 1 damage from all ice attacks.  Winters Grasp still freezes them, but does no damage.  Athlok Burst is still useful for fire damage, and the CC freeze is still very nice, but don't count on using anything ice based to actually do damage.

I know that Ice doesn't really work on NM, but OP asked how/what worked on them, without saying on which difficulty. So I assumed he talked about them in general, not specific NM.
