I'll just get to the point. Dragon Age Inquisition has me intrigued but like The Witcher, i'm sure it has a good amount of lore behind it. Before I played the Witcher I had to put in about 8 hours of research & reading. I was wondering exactly what would I have to read to get involved with Dragon Age before I play Inquisition.

It would help to read The Masked Empire and Asunder, the two prequel novels to DAI. But they aren't compulsory; it just adds a little to the experience.

The DA Wiki is a good place to start.  Read the pages on DAO and DA2.  Read the DAO and DA2 sections for each of the companions to see their history.  There's references and cameos in DAI that will make much more sense with context.

Take a look at the DA Keep and start building your own worldstate and either look up on the wiki or ask here if you want more in depth detail on the quests and characters.

There's two novels set pre-DAI - Asunder and The Masked Empire.  Reading both of these will help give you greater context for the mage/templar war and the civil war.  Reading the other novels will also help (the first two - Stolen Throne and The Calling - are set pre-DAO and can be read without any prior knowledge).  There's also The Last Flight which gives a lot insight into the Grey Wardens and the Blight.

Yes, I'd read those books, but also look up what happened in the previous two games in depth would help too.

Last Flight isn't really super-relevant to DAI, aside from hints about what the Wardens are up to. I would watch a playthrough of the Legacy DLC from DA2, however, as that DLC is important to the events of DAI.

If you're interested in the lore of the games in general, The World Of Thedas Volume 1 is the book you're looking for. Dragon Age: Asunder and Dragon Age: The Masked Empire are also good reads if you're planning to start with DAI, as they go deeper into 2 of the major problems that the world is facing: The mage uprising and the Orlesian Civil War. If you're interested about what happened in previous games, I suggest you use the Dragon Age Keep, a free website that explains what happens in DAO and DA2, and is also used to import your decisions from previous games into DAI.

Kotaku's starter guide might be useful as well. It is a 'story so far' compilation.

Reading the books and comics is a good idea and all, but why not just play the first two games?

The OP did ask what reading they'd need to do.  I agree that playing the games would be better, but they may not have the time commitment to play 2 full games.

Perhaps take a look at DragonAgeKeep.com

There, you can look at tiles that represent the major possible choices available in previous games, and then you can take any questions you have about those tiles and look at corresponding wiki pages.  Once you're comfortable with a world state set up in the Keep, you may feel ready to start Inquisition.

Happy gaming!

This! I started playing Inquisition blind, and was pretty confused about what was going on. Reading that little guide caradoc2000 was so kind to link is what got me up to speed. If you want to know everything there is to know, you'll need more, but it was wonderful for getting me to a place where I knew just enough to enjoy what was going on in Inquisition, and I began learning more on my own.
