Elite magical barriers.

With Even Ground & Walk Softly, a 'promoted' barrier seems to be basically invincible. I've tried all kinds of (normal and innovative) ways to bring them down, but have never even destroyed their barrier (yes, elite barriers have their own barrier). I ended up having to leave the area, turn trials off, and return.

Of course, I may just be an idiot that's missing an easy way to bring them down...

I got lucky so far in my NM trials playthroughs, none of the barriers I ran into were of the promoted kind.

But what really wasn't fun in the beginning of the new mage pt: arriving in Haven, crafting an electricity staff like I usually do, trying to get some mats via the Nugs that run around there and each and every one of them seem to be the elite 'electricity resistance' kind. Doing 1dmg point to a damn Nug is an experience.

I've had some luck with two mages in the party, both of whom are equipped with the appropriate staff. Set both of them on the barrier (Energy Barrage is your friend). Meanwhile, click the "Attack my target" button and the rest of the party will attack the barrier along with the mage. It seems that only a mage may target the barrier initially, but once it's under attack, anybody in the party can damage it. At least that was my experience with it.

Also, make sure that both mages have Dispel. That will help with the barrier's barrier.

I had Solas attacking the barrier around the second body pit at the Citadel in the Exalted Plains for a solid 10 minutes before I thought to click "Attack my target." I literally went down to the kitchen, made a peanut butter sandwich, and came back and the barrier still wasn't down. Of course, by that point, Solas was out of lyrium potions, so the revenant cleaned his clock (or polished his egg?), but that's a story for another day.

ave to have a mage with the opposing element to break those barriers. Hence a two mage party at least, or a lot of swapping for each prommoted barrier. I run with those trials on all of the time and, no problem, it's a bit of work but, not impossible to break them.

Unlike a normal barrier where any old staff of any flavor will take it down, a promoted barrier cannot be taken down by a staff of the same energy type.  I had this issue in the Western Approach.  Both Dorian and my Inquisitor had electricity staves and could not make the thing budge.  I had to stop, go find a fire staff and then had to put a spirit rune on it to take it out.  And the kicker was that the fire staff I used was absolute crap in terms of DPS (it was a found staff).  It literally took a minute once I changed staves.

Here's a trick I learned from someone here (can't remember handle, sorry): if you only have one mage in the party, carry several Tactician Renewal amulets with you. Respec on the spot to get the high damage elemental skill you need for the barrier. Then respec back to what you were before.

Just quick load. Pretty much always removes the elite status.

Note: You cannot dispel these barrier's regenerating barrier. It must be actually damaged until it is broken.

Another way to break through the elite barriers is to get a 2h warrior with the Chromatic Greatsword (which does elemental damage) and combat-roll through the barrier using the new upgrade in trespasser.

I'm doing a no-reload challenge at the moment. I'm taking all loot drops, combat outcomes, and enemy promotions as they fall, and if a randomized event or War Table mission doesn't go the way I want it to, tough luck. If I get a full party wipe, I'm going to refrain from reloading and accept the fact that this particular inquisitor's career is over. No farming, obviously. It's been interesting. I hadn't realized how much I take the ability to save the game at will for granted.
