Is he supposed to be the canon Warden from Awakening? He's Orlesian... The new Warden from Awakening was Orlesian. He knows Anders quite well and presumably Nathaniel Howe. Our Warden put him through the Joining if I recall correctly and is regarded as a high ranking member. I think this makes total sense.

Not the HoF. In Awakening, you can import your HoF, or start from scratch. That Warden from scratch is supposed to be Orlesian.

Yes, an Orlesian Warden with the default last name 'Caron'. Not Stroud.
Oh! Are you asking if Stroud put Anders through the Joining? 
If so, there's nothing in the lore to suggest that Stroud ever rose through the ranks to the level of Warden-Commander, or that he ever served in Ferelden... his codex entry says he worked under W-C Clarel for decades and that he preferred to be in the Free Marches rather than in Orlais.

Ah, thank you! I'm not a lore expert by any means, and I only know about Stroud because I recently did a crack playthrough of Awakening as Warden-Commander Clarel. Reading up on her background led me to information on Stroud... he's an interesting character, to be sure.
