I really like killing dragons. I enjoy seeing how fast I can kill them, and experimenting with different attacks. For example, there's joy in a MoD>Hidden Blades>Throwing Blades>Thousand Cuts>Trigger sub 10sec dragon kill.

But...I'm sufficiently immersed in the game to regret killing them every single time. They hide away in obscure places, bringing up their babies or soaring gracefully around. The best one is just innocently snoozing.

So I need a solid justification for killing them. Anyone got one?

They're apex predators which require a large amount of energy to sustain themselves.

By killing all the high dragons you've doomed orlais and ferelden to an unheard of rise in the population of rams, nugs and brontos, previously kept in check by the high dragon's predation.

Eventually those herbivores will eat all the foliage, and turn the majority of those lands into a barren wasteland devoid of greenery.

Nice job Inquisitor.

Where they are located near populated areas, you should absolutely kill them. The Fereldan Frostback has already killed a number of people and is breeding more dragons. The Northern Hunter in Crestwood bit the head off one guard and has a voracious appetite, so it will probably kill more people. Your agents in Emprise Du Lion make it clear the three dragons in Emprise Du Lion will eventually threaten the local populace.

You should kill the Abyssal High Dragon because the Venatori want it as a prize and it will push forward the field of draconology. With the others ... I'm less clear on your motivations, aside from "They drop great loot and give you big boosts in Influence."

I guess you should keep in mind that the dragon population seems to be exploding, and since they're an apex predator, it's literally up to a handful of dragonslayers to keep the setting from devolving into a Reign of Fire scenario.

Let's keep in mind that Professor Frederic doesn't seem to object to your dragonslaying, and his entire field of study is dragons. If he thought there was a danger of the species disappearing, he probably wouldn't point you towards more dragons.

The one in Crestwood is attacking caravans on the road, bit the head off a villager IIRC from the board in the village. The three in Emprise are brooding thus they've got potential to produce any number of young, and once the dragonlings get off that island and into the red lyrium?

The Ferelden Frostback in the Hinterlands actually did a favor by taking out the smugglers, but it's a potential danger to Redcliffe.

The dragon in EP has the potential to cause all sorts of problems once refugees start returning and reconstruction efforts start.

That's all I gots.

All the dragons save one are very close to either populated areas or major trade routes.  Since High Dragons tend to eat first and ask questions later (if at all) and tend to torch (sometimes quite literally) the local real estate, those dragons absolutely do need to die.  The one exception is the dragon at the Hissing Waste.  Unfortunately that Dragon has decided to act as a guard to a tomb that you absolutely want to enter (if you do this map at all)...so it's you or her.

Going to the DLC, Hakkon in dragon form needs to die for what should be obvious reasons (and I like to think that Hakkon as he is released from mortal bondage thanks you not just for freeing him but doing it his way, i.e. in battle).

I've been getting flashes of Shadowrun lately. The ambient level of magic ups, the creepy crawlies come out, and then you have Ryumyo showing up at Mount Fuji on Christmas 2011.

Dragon burgers.  Dragon armor.  Dragon blood for runes.  There are a lot of uses.  It isn't like you're killing a sapient creature here.  It's no more conflicting than whacking a snoufleur for bacon.

The same reason you climb a mountain... because it's there. Thedas and the Dragon Age universe still have many Medieval trappings, but other than the odd lack of firearms they are almost High Renaissance in technology. Dragons have no place in such a transformational world.

It's been awhile, is that just DA2 or has he spoken in Trespasser as well?

If we do go Shadowrun I want my Bioware...

(I have that sourcebook and I was really depressed when Bioware didn't do Shadowrun games :rolls:)

I'll give you 4 reasons:

1) They're the embodiment of raw power, but it's all uncontrolled, so they need to be destroyed. (Thanks, Bull.)

2) Dragonbone

3) Dragonscale

4) Dragon Webbing

OK, five: Demonslaying runes.

Just think, Every time you kill one Iron Bull pleases himself that same evening. The more you kill, the Jollier the Bull gets, also i think the tavern is pregnant.

Because the Dragons could potentially harm villagers or your soldiers patrolling the area.

So you're telling me it's an ecological thing? My dragon murdering inquisitor is a warrior, and also an ecologist...so he's an eco-warrior?  Plus he's fixing the big green hole in the ozone layer. Suddenly it all makes sense!

The one in Crestwood is menacing the town, so that's a specific reason for that one. Most of the rest are quite close to populated areas, even if they're not directly menacing the populace -- the three in Emprise, and the ones in Hinterlands, Emerald Graves, and Exalted Plains -- so killing those is justified as well. The remaining few are in the middle of nowhere, so they're a bit of a stretch.

There is no justification either way. Among fantasy fans, people either love or hate them. I don't know where it comes from exactly. It's kind of instinctual.

Straykat, to be fair, phishface does seem to be looking for an in game justification as to why the IQ should kill them off.

Of course, you are on to something.
