Maybe Bioware should just let  George R. R. Martin write the script for Andromeda

Then you'd have several characters ressurecting and loads of false death cliffhangers on top of all the actually dead ones :P. Martin doesn't permanently kill as many characters as his reputation claims, I find.

Anyway, no, I don't think making companions potentially buy the farm at any point in the story is a good idea.

It works in games like XCOM because the characters are in no way essential to the narrative. They are soldiers. You may customize them and assign personalities to them, but compared to companions in Bioware games they are much less important to the story. It's still sad when they die, but you don't permanently lose a large chunk of writing when it happens.

And in RPGs with companion permadeath, such as Baldur's Gate, Fallout and Fire Emblem, the majority of players will just reload if a character they like gets killed. So in the end it adds little to the game I find.

At least don't make it so all key companions CAN die before the final game.

It was a bummer for all of us ME2 fans that we couldn't have a single ME2 squadmate as a team member in ME3.

Yep. Instead of giving the hologram  a platform. an ME2 squadmate could've been on the ship. As much as I like James, he could've been replaced with an ME2 squadmate. If Garrus and Tali can be made squadmates even though both can be dead, then so can the ME2 squadmates.

I think they use him because they need a 3 members party if all the members are dead which are Liara and James. All the others can be dead or DLC. That's one of the downfalls, they need permanent fill in characters if the previous companions can die, thus also reducing their importance.

Still would not of had Tali and Garrus as squadmates if both can be dead.

Tali is an exception, she wasn't even to be included in the first place. It was really luck that she made it. Garrus is more about his popularity. What I'm saying is they're just accounting for the worst case scenario where ALL the squadmates were dead, in which case, you would only have Liara. While Tali and Garrus could have been any ME2 characters, it's more about a What if scenario where every single squadmate is dead in the previous game.

Yeah, that's definitely why ME3's roster is the way that it is.

The suicide mission, while awesome, was probably not the best idea to put in the middle of a trilogy since it created a logistical nightmare for Bioware.

If they're going to do that kind of thing again, which I hope, maybe it's better suited for the last game.

I would guess one reason that Garrus and Tali were squadmates in the game was that they know Liara and if those two won't on the ship and two different ME2 squadmates were on the ship, there would be less banter. Its probably the same reason that Wrex is a squadmate in the citadel dlc and not any of the ME2 squadmates
