I'm wondering if the war Solas mentioned that started the ancient elven mages to godhood has something to do with the Tewinter dragons (Old Gods)? Could they be the ones who defeated and locked the dragons away?
What if the war wasn't started by the Old Golds but the elves themselves? The beginning of their spiral into greed and hunger for more.
In view of what remains of Elven mythology and the murals we see in Tresspasser, I think it is more likely that the war that elevated the Evanuris was against the "Sun." Question is what the sun is ( besides incredibly creepy and potentially the inspiration for Chantry iconography).I'm wondering if the war Solas mentioned that started the ancient elven mages to godhood has something to do with the Tewinter dragons (Old Gods)? Nope. The old gods are rivals to the evanuris, or perhaps they were so far beyond them that the evanuris couldn't touch them. The old gods remember the time before the Veil, and they know about the titans. I think they were among the first sentient beings in creation. The evanuris were just powerful spirits/mages. They warred with other spirits, such as Xebenkeck.
Solas is just being condescending against the Grey Wardens because he dislikes their methods. He's been watching them for centuries. He's seen what they are willing to do in the name of the greater good. The idea of killing the old gods seems foolish to him, because it's easy to guess what will happen if the darkspawn no longer have any old gods singing to them. They will go mad and launch a never-ending war on the dwarves and the surface. A constant blight.
The old gods roamed the real world long after Solas went to bed. Humans worshiped them. Then at some point, all seven were sealed underground all at once. Again, Solas was asleep at this point.
Actually the old gods weren't wandering the real world long after Solas went to bed. According to the Thedas timeline around 50 years after the elves started to feeling the quickening (the raising of the Veil) the old gods started to whisper to humanity from the Golden City. Whilst it makes you wonder why they were thought to be dragons if they weren't wandering around, from everything we have been told, the old gods communicated with human priests though their dreams. Thalsian was a dreamer who was credited with being the first person to communicate with Dumat. If the old gods were flying around, you didn't have to be a dreamer to talk with them.
Humans were said to have first arrived in Thedas around 250 years before the quickening, so they were around at the same time as the evanuris. The Dalish legend that says the elves regarded them as little more than vermin is probably pretty near the truth. At best they just used them as extra slaves. This is why they were on hand to take advantage from the elven empire falling apart. I also wonder if the elven overlords had their way with human females, not worrying that the resulting children looked human because that just meant more slaves but that was how magic got into the human race. Since humans were around during the time of the evanuris, they would have seen them flying around in the form of dragons and this could explain why they associated dragons with divinity. So when Dumat (or whoever he was) contacted Thalsian and claimed to be a god, Thalsian would automatically assume that if he could be seen, he would be in the form of a dragon, so he used this in iconography.
If the evanuris were responsible for imprisoning the old gods, it could well be that so long as the evanuris were in charge, the old gods could not make contact with other mortals via the Fade but once the evanuris were shut away, that left the way open for the old gods to contact mages, and in particular dreamers, through the Fade.

I'm going with something like this for now.
We know the Evanuris exiled the Forbidden Ones - and we know that Elgarn'an had a battle with "the Sun" - but whether that translates at all to the Old Gods is very suspect.
The only thing that makes me think this "Sun" battle has something to do with the Old Gods is that he casts the sun into the abyss where a remnant of it is supposedly still locked away. We are told the Forgotten Ones dwell in the abyss.
But - of course, we have Solas tricking both the Evanuris AND the Forgotten Ones... which, conflicts with the Codex about the Forgotten One's exile by the Evanuris.
I think it's far more likely that the Old Gods were the Forgotten Ones (beyond the Forbidden Ones Gaxkang, Ishmael, Xebenkeck and the Formless One) and were imprisoned by the Evanuris. And, as you suggest, when Elvhenan fell - their prisons grew weaker. They called to humanity to release them... and, with the darkspawn still dwelling down in the abyss... humanity found that instead.
The story of Elgar'nan's battle with the Sun is a Dalish story. It could just be entirely made up or correspond to nothing at all from history, for all we know.
I'm wondering if the Old Gods were the first creation, might they have assumed the role of guardians; maintaining the stability of the Fade / World as it was then, as it grow and evolve? Contributing to it. I'm going on the premise that the growth included the creation of more beings; spirits, humans, etc. As more and more come into existence, so did new ideas (bad / good) materialised. Perhaps they imposed some sort of restriction to maintain balance in the Fade. Restrictions always breed curiosity, rebellions and ambitions. The seeds of greed among the ancient elves?

Not all Dalish stories are incorrect - some miss context, others are actually wrong (claiming that Mythal was locked away by Fen'Harel) but they are in some ways based either on actual events or Evanuris propaganda.
you seemed moved by the assumption that it were the old gods who leaded the magister into the golden city, but we can't be sure of that, that voices in Corypheus head could have easily been a spirit choice or an elven god.
