Builds aren't really the solution. Regardless of builds, you're basically requiring people to carry you. You will get hit, and if you can't take but 2 hits, no build will get you through perilous.

As others have mentioned, this is a load of bull. It might be true if you're trying to play an Archer with bad gear in PUGs, but you can easily do Perilous with many level 10+ characters once you have level 20+ weapons and the best armor (top crafted or Drakescale).

Yeah I've gotten some weapons that are level 20 or so now (refined hossberg twainer)

As it so happens, that's the exact weapon I started Perilous with while having maybe like 3-4 promotions total. Was on a Reaver. But the improved armor is really important (with some exceptions for classes with lots of Barrier ability) -- you really need the best crafted or Drakescale. Good starting characters for Perilous would include...

Legionnaire
Reaver

Silent Sister

Keeper
Elementalist
Virtuoso
Saarebas

The way damage is calculated, Drakescale armors are only really useful with a ton of stats. The nearest your are from max %defense, the better Drakescale armors become.

The highest craftable tier for your character is the best way to go when you're starting. That 6% melee/range/magic defense is much higher protection than the 10 Armor Rating from Drakescale armors.

Quite the reverse as pointed out -- the % reduction gets better as you get near max reduction from stats. The % reduction is also better for the bigger the hit, which means Drakescale is weaker in NM than Perilous, in Perilous than Threatening, etc. Drakescale also applies to both melee AND ranged damage.

And for casters in particular, the 6% magic defense is just terrible compared to the increased armor. Drakescale all the way on mages.

I would second this.

For Perilous and below:

Lego is absolutely unkillable with all the damage reduction and armor passives, so long as you have top armour.

Not too sure with Reaver since you will need a bit of critical chance for CD.

Silent Sister is also great with all the armor passives. Charging bull will give you a lot of guard.

Saarebas you can just spam barrier all day long.

Keeper is nice with barrier, but more complicated compared to saarebas.

Elementalist would require a little bit of cunning / critical chance for firestorm spam, so I would shy away from him in the light of Saarebas until you have a few cunning and crit chance rings etc.

Virtuoso is also nice with the barrier, but again, Saarebas will be easier. Little Knight Music is far less favourable until you can get decent staves.

So in general, the best starting characters for each class will be:

Lego

SS

Saarebas

No, you don't need any critical chance. Your bread and butter is Dragon Rage for damage, Combat Roll for CC breaks, and Devour for healing.

Is Rampage and/or War Horn with Flow of Battle amazing? Sure, but that's not as useful for a newer player due to the lack of crit chance and/or needing to abuse auto crit on panic...which requires even more skill points for the set-up. On the flip side, you can have a very solid Reaver build by level 10 with Mighty Blow (you start with it anyway and it's useful versus shield guys at a minimum), Combat Roll, Devour, and Dragon Rage that is completely non-stat dependent (as in you don't need particular types of stats to function well). Will you set record clear times or something? No, but you can more than pull your own weight in Perilous.

Keeper is nice with barrier, but more complicated compared to saarebas.

To clarify: Keeper in general is less complicated than Saarebas...but not if you're literally just spamming the barrier key on Saarerbas. Keeper's still relatively simple to grasp the basics (Barrier the group members, Static Cage groups of enemies, Fade Cloak or Fade Step for escape).

Elementalist would require a little bit of cunning / critical chance for firestorm spam, so I would shy away from him in the light of Saarebas until you have a few cunning and crit chance rings etc.

Not really -- because you don't need to be spamming Firestorm. You'd be fine with 0% crit chance -- use Barrier when appropriate, Fire Wall chokepoints, use Firestorm on anything particularly nasty groups, and pick a fourth ability of your choice (I'm fond of Winter's Grasp atm for the instant freeze at any distance -- Fire Mine won't work well on a new player without much gear). Winter's Stillness, Clean Burn, and Gathering Storm will keep the cooldown times reasonable even without Flashpoint.

And a huge thing is Death Siphon for healing 10% of your life anytime ANYTHING dies -- which is MASSIVE for new players. Insane added survivability for people who either don't have HoK and/or can't easily land killing blows.
