I would normally agree, but then someone prints something and people get killed over it and its abit harder to see the world through that lens. Tough i do enjoy the South Park perspective, everything can be made fun of and should from time to time. Not to scorn, but just so that everything is equal, as it is.
The statistics you provided were minor and one of them was just a bunch of graphs and numbers, it did not say if women play hardcore games or mainstream games. It was all console games or disc-based games.
Women do not make up a large enough percentage of the mainstream market to change developers and publishers view on catering AAA games to women. The type of games I've seen marketed to women are casual games, because that is what the majority of them play.
Remember Me, The Longest Journey, Beyond Good and Evil, Parasite Eve, BloodRayne, Alien Isolation (disappointing sales according to Sega) and Bayonetta.
Well first there should be clear distinction of hardcore and mainstream games compared to casual games. I don't think platform can be give straight answers to that either, since that would mean that my Heartstone matches on PC are hardcore gaming, but same matches on my smartphone are casual then? ^^ I guess best way would be going with genres, but I'm sure that some games inside one genre would be labeled as casual and some hardcore. Distinction likely would depend person to person as well.
Wait someone thought you can't play as female in Fallout? And need to explain you can?
Fall Out 3 I had no idea. 2009-10 I had played their Elder scroll games. FO looked too much like a shooter and I wasn't interested until I heard here on the old BW site that you could be either male or female so I tried it out and enjoyed it, was going to pitch it when I got to the ending and then found out about Broken Steel so I'm still playing it.
After 20+ years of not having many choices I now buy games that give me those choices and every year there are a few more. I started with BG and continued played most of the BioWare games and choice of male or female is in the top 3-4 reason.
I don't buy games where there is no choice. And if there is a choice that I don't hear about when it's being marketed, it's not on my list of games to keep track of. Games like Horizon Zero Dawn looks good,
Got one of the Laura Croft games for Christmas last year and haven't gotten around to it. Have no interest at all in Witcher. But I'll preorder a BioWare game or FA or Elder Scroll game because of their character track record, as well as being enjoyable to play. Games like Diablo I II III, Borderlands those give me choices and I will buy them when they come out.
And then what followed was a surge of cartoonists making fun of Mohammed and the terrorists who committed the act. It didn't stop anything.

Yup, because free speech is a right, nobody has a right to not be offended, nor should they. There would be no subject anyone would be allowed to joke about. Censorship never wins out over free speech in the end.
Cool, Fo4 has a launch trailer. It sounds nice, and it has the female version of the protagonist in it.
ME3 had two FemShep trailers. You know why? Because any number of fans wanted it. There were already trailers of the male Shepard out there, so why split 50/50? The point of the trailers was to showcase FemShep not demonstrate that you could play a female character.
And I've always been of the opinion that male and female Shepard are two very different people. If you compare Mark Meer's and Jen Hale's performances, it's a completely different take on the character that has nothing to do with gender.
So, MEA isn't even out yet, won't be out for another year, and somebody's already demanding an excuse for not using female PCs in trailers?
Descent Trailer Female Protagonist:
And this is not to mention all the game play we were shown at E3 in 2014. The biggest being the final battle from IHW with a female Qunari.
It's really nice that FO4 shows both genders, but so what? Especially since we won't see a launch trailer until this time next year.

Well what makes the FO4 trailer interesting and great to me is that it's main trailer of the game that involves both genres of main character in the same trailer in a way that doesn't make people confused. I haven't yet seen trailer that would accomplish that.
This was always my big problem with lit. classes and lit. professors. All that 'what is the author saying here' and then the professor telling you you're wrong if your interpretation doesn't fit his/hers. How do you know?
You don't. You just make something up and defend it.
I don't get this 'hardcore' game stuff.
Am I hardcore gamer because I like, for example, EU4 or CK2?
Am I a 'casual' because I like, say, life is strange? Or gone home?
Maybe they are all just games and this attempt to divide things up by hardcore and casual games is just another way of saying 'girls don't play games because they don't like *insert title here* therefore acknowledging females is pandering to the sjw crowd '.
It's like people are afraid someone is going to steal there hobby away from them, rather than acknowledging that it is not 'their' hobby and having different people play is only a good thing.

I'd classify Hearthstone as both actually, it's up to the player whether they want a laid back and friendly game or whether they go all in and study the game, learning the strength and weakness of the cards, as well as strategy.
That graph looks more reasonable than the previous and I can take it somewhat seriously, that RPG percentage though, seems kinda iffy. Eh, could just be my personal bias at play, but I can't see more women playing RPGs than men.
Am I a 'casual' because I like, say, life is strange? Or gone home?
I am pretty sure that is the opposite of casual. If most of the games you are familiar with/own begin with the phrase Call of Duty, then yeah you a casual I'm afraid.

I think it depends on how much time and money you invest gaming.

What're you on about? A casual gamer is someone who mainly plays casual games or people who don't dedicate a lot of time to them. A hardcore gamer is someone who usually plays different types of games and usually dedicates a lot of time to playing video games.

I think an important part of this whole "what makes a gamer" thing is this question.
"Do you consider yourself a gamer?"
My mother played fruit ninja when she needed to kill a few minutes before leaving for work, I highly doubt she would answer yes if I asked her if she considered herself a gamer.

According to many of these studies then yes, she'd be a casual gamer.
