Really, now... we have androids that look exactly the same as humans, and of all robots that we could romance, we romance a Mr Handy? Might as well let us romance dogmeat then.
Who say we can't.

Sure it can, if you continuously stack a camel's back with straws and the last one you put on breaks it can be either the contributor or the deciding factor depending on how you look at it. Though I suppose choosing to heap your camels back with straws in the first place was probably the deciding factor.
I look it at like this. Let's say you love Japanese food. A five star Japanese restaurant opens up in your area. You hear a ton of great things about it, the food is good, the place is clean, everyone who eats there loves it. You check out the menu and it has plenty of food you're interested in trying. BUT you don't know whether or not the chef is Japanese. So you refuse to eat there based on not knowing the race of the chef. This is not a contributor. That is your deal breaker. You have chosen to ignore all other factors because of one detail. Now if the restaurant was a 3 1/2 star, but the place was clean, people still really like the food but it isn't five star dining, you look on the menu and see only one or two things you like, AND the chef isn't Japanese. Then the race of the chef is a contributing factor in your choice to not eat there.
Note: I'm not saying you would not eat somewhere based on the race of the chef.
Companies adhere to people's politics all the time, it just gets no mention the majority of the time because its the majority's politics.
Or they are following their own politics, just not yours. But it's a moot point considering the fact that we already know you can play a female in a BW game. This is more about flag waving demands from the fan base at this point. The ME series has been out for years, if female gamers still don't know they can play a woman already then I doubt a trailer is enough to give them a brain.
And who actually thinks a trailer tells them everything they need to know about game anyway?
Is there a meaningful distinction between being 'bullied' into making a decision and servicing a market you're afraid will reject you if you add some new stuff?
It depends. Does the company want to add the new stuff or are they simply adding it to maintain a public image and to avoid social backlash?

Physical differences could maybe make game 0,01% harder for girls or sth if you are looking at reaction time and things like that.. but seriously the difference won't be even noticeable. My mouse and internet connection limit my reaction time lot more than that and I'm still happy to play games ^^; I seriously doubt physical differences have any factor.
Rather than changing everyone I think there is push to change norms. To make it normal to have female protagonist or LGBT+ protagonist. To make it normal that girls play games too (it's already normal that they do and has always been, sadly some just want to deny it). People speaking up and criticism is only way for things to change for better and it has been working. Fallout 4 having trailer for both genders is kind of small victory in this way as well.
You just gotta love these threads.

Norms will change themselves in time. Forcing it though will just anger people and show you how much it isn't normal in actuality.
As for this game though, I don't care. It should be pretty open ended. Industry wise though is where the problems are.
It could be accurate as well, though so what? I think far too many people here only think romance=sex scene. If there is a story line along the lines that synthetics are people too it would make some sense for their to be a robot romance. Making it a sex bot like edi makes the question too easy IMO.
I was just wondering because we were told months ago that only human companions would be romanceable.
Edit: But is someone really wants to romance a Handybot in a French Maid outfit, who am I to judge? ![]()
Edit: also, Bethesda seems to think romance=will open and give you the profits ![]()

I guess. It's not like I'd hate on someone rubbing themselves on a piece of metal. It's just like "OK?"
That's better than decaying flesh, at least. Or a dog. I'd probably kill you out of disgust (if I could get away with it
).
LOL noticed this when I watched the F4 trailer and thought: "Well played Bethesda... give them what they want to shut them the hell up."

Either it's this time or people, maybe both. The situation is that people are fed up and want the change. If there is powers against the change there might need to be force. Without people making such big deal of Unity's multiplayer not having female assassin would Syndicate have female assassin? Likely not. I have personally mostly seen good outcomes from this push to change, I guess there is some criticism that goes overboard and everyone is never happy, but overall games have been getting better. And not only games, comics as well ^^

Like Bethesda could even do that.

*Force/Biotic face palm* Greeat... This went from Fallout 4 protagonist gender BS, to someone mentioning LGBT, back to gender pissing contest, now we're going to bestiality/zoophilia... HOLY F*CK!!

Well, this IS a forum for a series where you can "romance" aliens, no matter how hideous and sexually incompatible(ala Garrus).
Romancing Dogmeat gives you the puppies perk.

Trespasser was female only, it was not a combine trailer.I don't care for one gender for trailers. FO4 did something many fans asked Bioware and got the "it would confuse people" excuse.
I think the "confusion" argument may have been intended to apply to non-fans who aren't familiar with a given series and/or really stupid people. I think actual fans in the know who keep up on this stuff would not be confused by seeing both male and female versions of the protagonists.
I hate to say it, but I feel that there are actually a lot of dumb/oblivious people who would honestly be confused without any context/background if they're not familiar with a series and haven't kept up on information related to a specific game. If you're wondering how I can actually believe such a thing, here's my tale of incredibly stupid stupidity that I experienced today!
I got a manuscript today where the (repeat, mind you) author ONLY entered the word "Chapter" at the beginning of each chapter. She didn't number them and didn't even title her mystery opening section (which, using my book designer brain, I have determined is most likely to be a prologue after having been forced to read it). After three titles total, this dingbat can't seem to figure out that she's supposed to enter her chapter numbers herself (not just stick the word "Chapter" - sans any numbers whatsoever - at the beginning of every single bleeping chapter).
That is the level of stupid I deal with and see on pretty much a daily basis, and I'm pretty sure that stupidity like this author's exists everywhere - including in the gaming world. Therefore, I actually do believe that some gamers (the dumb/clueless ones) could conceivably get confused about things like the protagonist being fully customizable (including the gender).
What can I say, my job has led me to have a fairly low opinion of the intelligence of others. It's actually some kind of miracle that the other manuscript that I formatted today was decently written and had proper punctuation, grammar, and dialogue. I almost want to hug that author.

I can't wait for non-American names not to be voiced. Bethesda is so nice.

The problem wasn't that their weren't any playable Female Assassins, since everyone was Arno. The problem was their moronic reasoning, instead of just saying "There's no female assassin because you're always Arno.", they said some nonsense about it being too hard to animate. Funnily enough, besides her running, standing and walking animations, she uses the same parkour animations as Arno and mostly the same combat animations from Jacob.
You are right though, she probably wouldn't have been in the game had that employee had any brains, so I guess we have stupidity to thank for having a playable female assassin in a main entry of the series.

Not sure what you mean, but John is Hebrew, Cena is Italian/Albanian. There is no "American" name, unless you count South America but even those have European or African origins.

I'm talking about how common it is in America, which John is and Cene is a mainstream name noiw thanks to John Cena. I doubt you're going too many or any common names from other countries that are not common in America.

To be fair, this is a game made by Americans taking place in America. I don't quite expect them to start adding first names from other countries as a priority just like I didn't expect loads of people named Pierre in Metro Last Light.
ME3 had both gender trailers 3 years ago.

I didn't know that everyone is Arno part, but yep that explanation quite much required Ubisoft to make female assassin to their next title ![]()
You make it sound like they're obligated to do it with the whole "excuses" accusation.
They are not.
It's cool when they do.
But I seriously doubt "equal portrayal of genders" in a single trailer are something the Bioware focuses too much about.
You talk to EA for that.
Well the hair looks good, 1up on DAI(well bioware in general). I hear its moves in the wind depending on style.
Aww, but I liked Biowares 50 ways to make a baldie.
