Hey everyone, enjoying the game so far but I remember BioWare proclaiming these awesome finishing moves and showing them off in trailers.
However I just killed the Ogre and all he did was fall to the floor and I could immediately loot his corpse, like any normal fight.. no finishing move to be seen. Is it because I'm a mage? What gives..
Combat finishing moves - what happened to them?

I have a warrior and I did see the finnishing move. So, I would say that it is because you are a mage.

As a mage you dont have finishing moves as far as I can tell. But, I did play the city elf origin as a warrior elf and he beheaded a few humans quite espectacularly I might add. But as a mage, I think that une less you have control of Alistair or Sten, if you have them in your party, you won't be seeing any finishing moves. Hopefully I am completly mistaken

Yeah, I have to agree with everyone here saying it's the mage thing. Finishing moves have played for me only when someone with a weapon deals the deathblow. Otherwise it's as anticlimatic as the OP writes.

I'll add that the only finishing move I've seen is the ogre battle, and I saw it from way far away, making it less than spectacular.

Spell Combos are likely the replacement for the finishing moves, and I for one find it a good one. The mage can get their cool moves in mid fight, and the melee finish it up (or you can time your combos to be finishers, and get the same effect)

Tower guard did leap on the ogre for me too. I have screenshots I'll post once the site is fixed lol. There's also some pretty nice killing blows on various monsters, they don't all go in slow-mo however.
I've decapitated darkspawn, remove their head from their little body. I've also slashed wolfs good with double slashes with flourish. Personally, I think the combats is made pretty unique with the killing blows. It's not as "matrix-like" as I once believe it would be but it still gives A LOT of personality to combat.

Well as a mage wheat do expect him to do as a finishing move since most of the time you never touch the bad guys? LOL.
As for the other guys they are totally random, I have seen my Rogue behead and impale, actaully its more like 3 impales in 3 fast movements.
Some characters have specail finsihing moves too. For instance the first org you fight in the tower My guy jumped on his chest with his sword gushing into the orges chest, knocking it over then he walked on his chest to his head and stabed his sword through his face.
Was pretty entertaining.

There are plenty of "normal" melee ones too, such as decapitations and shields to the throat. If you are playing a mage though it is doubtful you will notice many.

I must have missed out on the finishing on the ogre playing a mage as well. However the ogre did die with walking death bomb which always looks kind of cool even though it was the cause of alastars death since he was low health because he was being pummeled at the time.

The finishing move on dragons is fairly entertaining as well, especially from the pov of the rogue or warrior doing it

The finishing moves on lesser enemies are rather subtle and easy to miss. The epic ones are against the bosses.

I got a finishing move on the Orge where I impaled him with my 2h mace. That was odd looking.

I have a mage, and I have seen some finishing moves done only by Alistair. But it was awsome...

There are finishing moves against smaller enemies, like darkspawn. I've seen a couple different ones, including decapitation, performed by my 2H weapon wielding main character. I dunno what the swword and board finishers are like, and mages and archers don't get them. I mean, why would you expect them to?

I've had the decapatation a few times but my fave was during the noble human origin.
I'd just piled through a fighting line to kill a mage when I noticed a bad guy was coming up to wail on me from behind.
I clicked attack and my noble reversed his big 2-hander to impale the guy without turning around.
It was just so great

Decapitation is an awesome. I like the more subtle ones actually. Not to put too many spoilers, ...
In the duel in Demetrin or where ever I had the awesome turn your back and impale the guy with the two handed sword move. Seemed a fitting end for that douche.

I've seen A LOT of finishing moves from myself and my party members. It's just that it has to be done by someone with a melee weapon and it has to be the last mob remaining.

It doesn't need to be the last mob.On_Slaught wrote...

My rogue does finishing moves quite often mid battle.
And you don't need to be directly controling them.
Alistar did the finishing move on the Ogre for me.

I watch my mom (Lady Cousland) do the shield stab to the face finishing move and I've had quite a few from Alistar and my Warrior, but none so far for the Mage. Perhaps someone should try frezzing the enemy then casting shatter fist (or whatever it is called), that sounds like it would be a finishing move.

The priestess in the tower, Lily, did a finishing move in one of the combats with sentinels during the mage origin story. You just have to watch. It doesn't happen a lot.
That said, the mage does get the finishing moves all the time when you manage to work a double spell effect. Winter's grasp followed by stonefist generates some nice explosions, if you freeze the bad guys.
