Ryder being the last name of the new protagonist would be in line with how Bioware named Shepard, assuming Ryder is derived from Sally Ride.

I'm naming my character Ezell "EZ" Ryder. Please don't let the protagonist be called "Pathfinder Ryder" doesn't sound right.

ANd just because we are military doesn't mean we're a soldier. We could be like Star Trek, on a peaceful diplomatic mission, but circumstances cause us to become a soldier.

Maybe in ME:A, the male and female protagonists are brother and sister, but only one survived, the one we create.

 

It could work. As an example: this is a fan creation of a femShep colonist whose twin brother maleShep died at Mindoir. The roles can be reversed of course.
