The picture looks more like a woman (with hair tied back into a bun, slender neck and shoulders) with arms around two somethings (children, maybe?), one wearing blue and one wearing red.
Might make sense that they are thinking of doing a one or the other lives type protagonist deal.
Maybe in ME:A, the male and female protagonists are brother and sister, but only one survived, the one we create.

If Ryder is the character's name, then the male default had better be Flynn, and had better be voiced by Zach Levy, or Bioware will have missed a Golden Opportunity...

Who would you send into a new galaxy to ensure the survival of our species? Some military level explorers and scientists are all that make sense.

But that makes it less likely they all mysteriously died so the pre-fab compound is empty and Bioware doesn't have to populate it with NPCs.
I like the name, sounds stong and heroic, like Hawke. I can also see a lot of jokes being made out of it.

I like the idea of brother and sister being the protagonist, and maybe they're the children in that picture.

The new ME protagonist is a clone of Cmdr. Shepard's father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roomate, named Ryder.
I like how every one has a different opinion on what that photo is about. It's like the perfect rorschach test
We all now it's someone near and dear to our protagonist. Could be anything, but I am glad it's a bit blurred, allows us to be imaginative and create ideas in who and what we want that picture to be for our protagonist.

If there is no entry level employees to do the dirty work than the scientists will have to do it themselves. And even if there were, would you stand around doing nothing waiting for the so called lower level employees to stack that waist high cover, or would you take the initiative to do it yourself?

Certainly a good amount of teases to think about until we get more information in the future, but yeah to me it looks like a family and the two kids are maybe siblings.

My feelings as well. Classes should extend to playing different types, ie; trader, explorer etc. Quite over working for the military.
"Ryder" is an English name for "Knight". So it makes even more sense.
